CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Navy men's soccer senior defender Joseph Greenspan has been named the Patriot League Corvias Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending October 5, the league office announced Monday.

Greenspan played an outstanding all-around game Navy's 1-0 shutout of Lafayette on Saturday evening.

Greenspan played the full 90 minutes at center back, frequently clearing balls off the backline and heading away crosses into the box. Greenspan helped hold Lafayette to zero shots on goal and just seven shots overall in the contest. It was Navy's third shutout of the season.

Greenspan also started the scoring play on the game's only goal. Lafayette was whistled for a foul near midfield and Greenspan sent the free kick into the Leopards penalty box. Junior Derek Vogel headed the ball forward to junior Thomas Shiiba who finished past the Lafayette goalkeeper.

The 6-foot-6 center back also had a strong defensive game in Navy's 1-1 draw with #20 George Mason last Tuesday. Greenspan was the only Navy field player to log all 110 minutes and he helped Navy win the overall shots margin against the high-powered George Mason attack.

Greenspan is averaging 93.7 minutes per game this season (Navy has played four overtime games).

This is Greenspan's fourth career weekly honor from the Patriot League.

Greenspan, a 2013 NSCAA All-American, is on the 2014 MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List and he earned preseason All-America honors from both College Soccer News and Top Drawer Soccer.

Navy (5-4-2, 1-1 PL) will next host American on Wednesday at 7:00 PM.
