PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- After knocking off 10th-ranked Princeton just 10 days ago, the 16th-ranked Navy squash team fell short of beating its second top 10 team as the Mids dropped a 7-2 decision to No. 9 Penn Wednesday evening at the Ringe Squash Courts in Philadelphia. It was Navy's first loss of the season (12-1), while Penn improved to 4-0.
"We faced a Penn team that featured a pretty powerful lineup at the top of the ladder and also happened to be all freshmen," said 15th-year Navy head coach Craig Dawson. "Both Randy (Beck) and Colin (Barry) played gutsy matches tonight against their opponents and Will (Walker) came up just a few points short in his match."
Navy sophomore Randy Beck (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) is playing at the top of his game and after succumbing 11-6 in his opening game against sophomore Rahil Fazelbhoy, he bounced back to score the 3-1 victory at the No. 6 position on the ladder. Beck is one of just two players on the roster who is undefeated, while his 12 wins lead the team.
Meanwhile Navy senior Colin Barry (St. Louis, Mo.) fought off Penn freshman Michael Mutscheller in a five-game thriller. Barry jumped out to a 1-0 lead, but Mutscheller won back-to-back games, 11-7 and 11-3, turning the momentum in his direction. Barry came back to even the match with an 11-8 win in the fourth and scored the match victory in the fifth with an 11-8 win. Like Beck, Barry is also unbeaten this season, boasting a 10-0 mark.
Sophomores Reed Whitney (Ladue, Mo.) and Will Walker (Scarborough, N.Y.) came up just short in their matches at the No. 7 and 8 positions, respectively. Whitney, who was named the College Squash Association's National Player of the Week for clinching the Mids' win over Princeton, dropped a four-game decision to junior August Frank. Meanwhile, Walker won games one and four, but Tyler Odell, a junior, sealed the match win by way of an 11-7 victory in the fifth.
The Midshipmen will play their final match of the 2014 calendar year when they travel to Hanover, N.H. to face 11th-ranked Dartmouth Saturday at 11:00 am.
