Feb. 28, 2014

Final Stats

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy swimming and diving teams concluded Friday's first day of the ECAC Championship in second place in the respective men's and women's standings. The Navy men scored 170 points and trail first-place Marist by just six points, while the Navy women accrued 161 points and trail Pittsburgh by 44 points.

The meet is being contested in Navy's Lejeune Hall and runs through Sunday.

"Overall," said Navy men's swimming head coach Boll Roberts, "we had some good, solid swims this morning and tonight, and some good efforts. We are looking forward to the next two days and building off of what we did today."

The best event of the night for both Navy teams was the 500 freestyle as a total of five Mids advanced to the championship finals. The men's final was a close one as Pittsburgh's Spencer Gray won the race in a time of 4:28.34, with Navy's Shane Condon (Fr., Mechanicsville, Va.) and Nathan Stinson (So., Nashville, Tenn.) placing second (4:28.81) and third (4:29.03), respectively. The Navy duo was joined in the final by Kevin Stoddard (Jr., Highlands Ranch, Colo.), who placed eighth (4:38.16). On the women's side, Madeline Bliss (Fr., The Woodlands, Texas) placed sixth (4:59.13) while Alyssa Dilldine (Prairierville, La.) finished in seventh place (5:03.55). Bucknell's Kelly Pontecorvo won the event (4:51.55).

The top placing Mid in the 200 individual medley was Tom Hetzel (So., Charlotte, N.C.), who finished in seventh place. UMBC's Mohamed Hussein posted a time of 1:44.14 to win the final. Though no Mids advanced to the women's championship final in the 200 IM, team captain Lauren Baguley (Sr., Hudsonville, Mich.) would win the consolation final (2:06.73).

Navy's women's team would advance both Paige Rutkoske (Fr., Beacon, N.Y.) and Nicole Skaggs (So., San Diego, Calif.) to the championship final of the 50 free. Rutkoske finished in sixth place (24.01) and Skaggs placed eighth (24.14). Winning the women's final was Villanova's Kaisla Kollanus (23.41). In the men's championship final of the event, Navy's Michael Bundas (Fr., Saline, Mich.) placed sixth (20.96) behind the winning time posted by UMBC's Gregor Spoerlein (20.41).

In diving, Navy's Julie Jesse (So., Edwardsburg, Mich.) finished in sixth place on the women's one-meter event (225.75). Sam Winkelmann scored 271.65 points to win the board.

The evening both began and concluded with relay events. Navy's women's team would place fourth in both the 200 free relay (1:36.26) and 400 medley relay (3:51.84), while the men finished third in both the former (1:23.10) and the latter (3:21.10).
