ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy men's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to No. 55 George Washington Saturday afternoon at the Tose Family Tennis Center in Annapolis.
"We came prepared and ready to play today," said Navy head coach John Officer. "I think the difference was George Washington's schedule (the Colonials have a record of 2-4 against nationally-ranked teams). It was brutal, and it gave them an edge as they are tested."
The Colonials (6-4) began the day by picking up wins at the Nos. 1 and 3 flights to earn the doubles point. Navy (8-5) evened the team score at 1-1 when Alex Gaines (So., Wilmington, N.C.) posted a 6-1, 6-3 win over Michael Lau at No. 6 singles. However, George Washington would win each of the remaining five singles matches in straight sets.
"They (George Washington) do a very good job of making you hit an extra ball," said Officer. "They constantly made us hit an extra ball and never gave us anything free. We are happy to have them in this area as it is good to have a really good team here. They are No. 55 in the country and could be higher than that.
"You can't fault our guys. They played hard. We stood up for ourselves out there; we didn't back down, which was good."
Navy will be back in the Tose Family Tennis Center Sunday for matches against both Mount St. Mary's (noon) and Monmouth (5 p.m.).
