ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Senior captain Geoff Fries and the No. 25 Navy men's soccer team opened its 2014 preseason training camp on Monday morning at the U.S. Naval Academy.

Fries, a midfielder from Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, will serve as the team captain and takes over the role from 2014 graduate Zach Davis.

"I've been blessed by great leadership in front of me with our former captains from Sam Miller, Giiehti Christian and Zach Davis," said Fries. "They set the standard for me to be the type of peer leader that I need to be for these guys and luckily I've been blessed with a great group of guys. I want to make sure we are as close off the field as we are on and the type of relationships that we can bring to this team and to this school can be even greater than they have been."

Fries has played in 52 games with 22 starts during his first three seasons at Navy. In 2013, he tallied seven points on three goals and one assist. He scored the game-winning goal in Navy's 2-0 win over Holy Cross in the 2013 Patriot League Tournament Championship. Fries also scored two goals in Navy's 3-0 NCAA First Round win over VCU.

Under sixth-year head coach Dave Brandt, Navy opened the 2014 preseason with a pair of training sessions on Monday.

"It was a good start," Fries said following the morning session. "It was about an hour and a half session. Just a basic intro to the freshmen and to make sure everyone is on the same page coming back. We got to do a lot of the movements we are used to and do the things we try to implement on the field. Getting the plebes involved and getting them up to the speed that we like to play at was good as well."

Navy will play a home exhibition match against Binghamton on Friday, August 22 and the Mids will officially open the 2014 campaign with two games in Colorado the following weekend. Navy will play at Air Force on Friday, August 29 and at Denver on Sunday, August 31.

Navy returns five starters and welcomes in 10 newcomers for the upcoming season. Navy was 16-4-2 overall last season and won the Patriot League Regular Season title with a 9-0-0 mark. Navy finished the season ranked 25th in the NSCAA Top 25 Poll.

"It was a great season last year," Fries said. "But our guys want more. Yes, we won the Patriot League and won an NCAA game, but guys are coming back hungry. I don't think there will be any letdown. We want to see how far we can take this thing."
