ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Senior
Grant Valenstein had a goal and an assist and the Navy men's soccer team (4-3-1) defeated visiting Longwood (1-4-1), 2-0, at the
Glenn Warner Soccer Facility on Tuesday evening. The win snaps a two-game losing streak for the Mids.
"It's always good to get a win, and coming off two losses, it was important for us to win tonight," head coach Dave Brandt said. "I thought we were good across the board tonight and it was a good effort for the guys."
Junior forward Jamie Dubyoski put Navy on the board in the sixth minute with his fourth goal of the season. Junior forward Thomas Shiiba had a good ball in sending Valenstein down the left side and when Valenstein reached the ball he fired a cross into the box where a charging Dubyoski finished left-footed to the inside post.
Dubyoski reached the 10-point mark for the second straight season as he now has 10 points on four goals and two assists. Dubyoski earned his third game-winning goal of the season and he has a team-best six in his career.
Valenstein would score a goal of his own in the 34th minute to give Navy a 2-0 first-half lead. Freshman Aubrey Jones played a ball to junior P.J. Suess who immediately sent a ball forward to a cutting Valenstein, who chipped the ball past Longwood goalkeeper Carlos Canas.
Navy had more than three times as many shots as Longwood in the contest (24-7) but couldn't finish any for a third goal. The Mids had nine shots on goal and also outshot Longwood in the second half, 17-4.
Senior All-American Joseph Greenspan and junior Derek Vogel were solid in Navy's central defense, as they held Longwood to just one shot on goal. Greenspan was also active on the offensive end, recording a game-high five shots.
Junior goalkeeper Jackson Morgan made a save on his only contested shot of the night to earn his first career shutout.
Canas made seven saves for Longwood, but did allow the two first-half goals.
With the win, Navy improves to 3-1-0 at home this season.
Navy will open conference play at Boston University on Saturday at 7:00 PM. Navy won both the Patriot League Regular Season and Tournament titles in 2013. Free live video of the game will be available on navysports.com.
