ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy men's golf team began its 2014-15 season on Saturday with action in the opening round of the Navy Fall Classic. Competing with two entries in the 10-team field, the Mids' Blue squad stands in sixth place with a score of 291 (+7), while the Mids' Gold team is 10th with a first day score of 308 (+24).

"We posted a solid first round score today," said Navy head coach Pat Owen. "The Blue team stands only seven strokes out of first place, so I definitely feel that they are within striking distance with a strong showing on Sunday."

Seton Hall (280, E) leads the field, followed by Cornell (288, +4), Delaware (288, +4), Towson (290, +6) and Georgetown (290, +6).

August Jonas (Sr., Jacksonville, Fla.) and Bryce Keene (Sr., Bakersfield, Calif.) led the Blue team on Saturday with identical 71 (E) scores. The senior duo stands in a five-way tie for eighth place on the individual leaderboard. Kyle Martin of Delaware and John Hulede of Towson sit atop the individual standings as both carded a four-under par 67.

"I was really impressed by leadership exhibited by August and Bryce," said Owen. "They led by example and showed the way for us today."

Devin Terry (So., La Crosse, Wis.) and Connor Tallman (So., Lake Oswego, Ore.) joined Jonas and Keene in the individual top-20 as Terry shot a one-over par 72, good for 13th place, while Tallman sits in 17th with a score of 73 (+2).

"We had six freshmen making their collegiate debuts today and we got mixed results from them, as you might expect," noted Owen. "They showed some nerves, but they had some highlights, as well. The future with our freshmen is bright."

Wade Hayes (Fr., Richmond, Va.) led that group of six that Owen mentioned as he debuted with a three-over par 74. The freshman, who is shooting as an individual, sits 20th overall.

The 36-hole Navy Fall Classic will conclude on Sunday as the 10 teams will tee off beginning at 8 a.m.
