Successful First Day for Men's Tennis

Sept. 6, 2014

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Members of the Navy men's tennis team combined to win 10 out of the 12 matches it played against St. Bonaventure on a sultry Saturday morning in Annapolis. The Mids won seven of the eight singles matches and three of the four doubles matches over the Bonnies, with nine different Navy players being part of at least one victory in the nearly four-hour match.

"Overall, it was good to see the guys have a great time playing, getting out there and competing hard for Navy," said Navy head coach Chris Garner.

Winning by the largest margin in the doubles portion of the match was Navy's No. 4 team of Alex Gaines (Jr., Wilmington, N.C.) and Joshua Martin (Fr., Foley, Ala.). The duo combined for a 6-1 win over Hristo Hristov and Jacob Mishkin. Winning by identical scores of 6-4 were Navy's No. 1 tandem of Thomas Pecor (So., Houston, Texas) and Aries Wong (Fr., Bethesda, Md.), as well as its No. 2 pairing of Tyler Burnett (Sr., Fayetteville, Ga.) and Tucker Massie (Fr., Bloomfield Hills, Mich.).

"I really thought a couple of the freshmen did a good job in doubles," said Garner. "Tucker and Aries really stuck out to me. They enjoyed having the opportunity to play. They were very comfortable, which was great to see."

Burnett, Gaines, Martin and Wong also posted singles wins. Burnett won in straight sets at No. 4, Gaines won in straight sets at No. 5, Martin won a three-set decision at No. 8 and Wong posted a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 2.

Also tallying singles wins for Navy were Walker Sims (Fr., Memphis, Tenn.), who won in three sets at the No. 1 flight, Tyler Tossavainen (So., Fleming Island, Fla.), a straight-set winner at No. 6, and Andrey Majkic (Fr., Jacksonville, Fla.), who recorded a three-set win at No. 7.

"In singles, Walker, who played the top spot, it seemed he handled himself well and was comfortable out there playing," said Garner. "He was right there in his match and wound up winning."

Navy will be back on the courts Sunday at 10 a.m. when it faces Temple.

"This weather is nothing compared to their fitness trainer, Becca (Grizzard)," said Garner. "I'm sure they would rather be out here playing this match than working out with her.

"Hopefully they will be able to come out (tomorrow) and play with energy again. It was hot and I am sure they are a little depleted, as far as how they are feeling. They have to get out there and repeat it. Over the course of a season you can play one good match, but you need to be able to string them together. You are going to need to be fit to do that. Hopefully we are moving in that direction."
