AMHERST, Mass. - After dropping a pair of matches Saturday against 14th-ranked Bates (5-4) and No. 2 Trinity (9-0), the 12th-ranked Navy squash team (13-4) bounced back Sunday morning to score an 8-1 victory over No. 21 Amherst on the road.

Navy's lone loss of the day was at the No. 1 spot where team captain Andrew McGuinness (Merion Station, Pa.) put up a strong fight but fell short in a four-game match to junior Noah Browne.

Four of the Mids' eight wins went extra frames with No. 2 Josh Hughes (Malvern, Pa.), No. 5 Randy Beck (Lafayette Hill, Pa.), No. 7 John Hsu (Manhassett, N.Y.) and No. 9 Sam McCartney (Chicago, Ill.) needing four games to close out victories.

Sophomore Reed Whitney (Ladue, Mo.) played perhaps his best match of the season, dealing Amherst senior Alexander Southmayd an 11-1, 11-3, 11-4 loss.

With injuries keeping freshman Jack Herold (Chicago, Ill.) and senior Jim Kacergis (Malvern, Pa.) out of the lineup this weekend, it gave McCartney, a freshman, an opportunity to play among the starting nine. The Chicago native came into the weekend having won both matches he had appeared in, but earned his first win as a starter on Sunday with an 11-4, 8-11, 11-4, 11-4 win over Amherst's James Line. He nearly captured it the day before against Bates, but was edged in the fifth game, 11-9.

Senior Colin Barry (St. Louis, Mo.), junior Bill Kacergis (Malvern, Pa.) and sophomores Will Walker (Scarborough, N.Y.) and Beck all produced 2-1 records for the weekend. Beck is atop Navy's wins list with a 14-2 mark, while Barry is right behind with just one blemish to go along with his 13 wins.

The Mids will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to the nation's capital and face George Washington at 5:30 pm.
