WASHINGTON, D.C. - Navy senior squash players Andrew McGuinness (Merion Station, Pa.) and Colin Barry (St. Louis, Mo.) earned wins in their respective matches to help seal a 6-3 win over 17th-ranked George Washington Wednesday evening at the Matthew J. Grossman Squash Courts at Lerner Health & Wellness Center.
The 12th-ranked Midshipmen (14-4) had built a 4-3 advantage in the match with veterans McGuinness and Barry left on the court to decide the team victory. McGuinness, who has spent nearly his entire career as the Mids' No. 1 player, dealt GW freshman Mason Ripka just his second loss of the season, 11-8, 13-11, 11-6. Barry, meanwhile, improved to 14-1 on the year by scoring an 11-7, 9-11, 11-4, 11-7 win over sophomore Nicolas Valderrama who was playing just his third match of the year.
Freshman Josh Hughes (Malvern, Pa.) beat GW sophomore Andres de Frutos in a spirited five-game match at the No. 2 slot. Hughes, who is one of three Navy players with 14 wins this season, fell behind in the match when de Frutos picked up the 11-6 win in the first. Hughes battle back and took the next two games, 11-6 and 11-7, before de Frutos forced a fifth game with an 11-8 win in the fourth. Hughes has been in this same position several times over the course of the season and once again proved he has ice in his veins with the 11-9 win in the fifth. It, too, was just the second loss of the year for de Frutos.
Meanwhile, the Mids won three of the four among the No. 6-9 matches, including a pair in five games. Sophomore Reed Whitney (Ladue, Mo.) won the final two games of his five-game battle against junior Reid Breck at the No. 6 position, while rookie Sam McCartney (Chicago, Ill.) fell behind two games to one before rallying to win the final two against John Bassett, 11-6 and 11-5, at the No. 9 spot.
With the match knotted at one win apiece, Will Walker (Scarborough, N.Y.) earned the win at No. 8 against sophomore Josh Marks with 12-10 and 14-12 victories in the third and fourth matches.
"The was a good win for us against a program that is coming off a solid performance against Bates at the beginning of the month," said Navy head coach Craig Dawson. "We have a scrappy team and I feel like we can win at any position."
The Mids will look to extend its winning streak on Sunday when it plays host to Williams at 10:30 am. That time was pushed back a half hour from its original 10 am start.
