WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Navy gymnastics team began its season on Friday evening with action at the West Point Open. One of five teams competing at the event, Navy finished in third place with a final score of 409.2. Penn State, the sixth-ranked program in the nation, won the team competition with 439.4 points. Army took the runner-up position with a total of 416.15, while Springfield and Temple finished in fourth and fifth with scores of 405.3 and 402.05, respectively.
Individually, Mitchell Larios (Jr., Frisco, Texas) led a group of six Mids who qualified for Saturday's event finals. The versatile junior earned spots in the finals on the floor exercise, vault and parallel bars. Seniors Thomas Goodell (Hopkinton, Mass.) and Eric Viscardi (Marietta, Ga.) joined Larios as multi-event qualifiers as they each earned two spots in Saturday night's competition. Andrew Potts (Jr., Ellicott City, Md.), Wyatt Lapointe (So., Mechanicsburg, Pa.) and Jonny Tang (So., Malvern, Pa.) all earned single bids with their scores during the team portion of the event.
As a team, Navy recorded a score of 70.15 in the floor exercise, 68.95 on the pommel horse, 69.05 on the rings, 68.8 on the vault, 67.95 on the parallel bars and 64.3 on the high bar. Each of the six scores exceeded the Mids' results at the West Point Open in 2014.
Larios registered scores of 14.0-plus in all three of his events on Friday as he scored a 14.5 in the floor exercise, 14.45 on the vault and 14.1 on the parallel bars. His floor exercise result was a career-high. He will be joined in the finals of the floor exercise by Tang, who improved on his previous personal -best by 0.5 points with a 15.0 effort.
A second Midshipman will also be competing alongside Larios in both the finals of the vault and parallel bars. On the vault, Viscardi's 14.3 effort was tied for sixth overall on Friday, while Goodell posted a 13.8 on the parallel bars.
Navy had a team-high three gymnasts qualify for the finals of the rings. The trio was led by Goodell, who posted a 14.3 score. Fellow qualifiers included, Viscardi and Lapointe, who earned scores of 13.95 and 13.75, respectively. Of note, this was the first collegiate meet that Lapointe had competed in on the rings.
Potts is the final Midshipman who advanced into action on Saturday. The junior posted a team-high 14.2 score on the pommel horse, good for seventh overall.
David Frick (St. Johns, Fla.) also performed well on Friday night and is currently listed as an alternate for the finals of the vault. The junior posted a career-high score of 14.0.
Friday's action saw the collegiate debuts of juniors Michael Dorsey (Hollywood, Fla.) and Zac Ceroli (Angier, N.C.), who competed on the pommel horse and vault, respectively. The freshmen duo of Noah Beeman (Dayton, Ohio) and Vadim Ivanov (Las Vegas, Nev.) also made their first appearances as Beeman competed in four events, while Ivanov posted a score on the high bar.
In the all-around competition, Army's Jesse Glenn came in first place with a final point total of 84.55. Tang was Navy's representative in the all-around and he finished with a score of 78.1 to take seventh place.
The West Point Open concludes on Saturday evening with the individual event finals slated to begin at 7 p.m. at Christl Arena.
