Men's Tennis Records Two Wins

Jan. 24, 2015

Final Stats

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy men's tennis team improved its record to 4-1 on the young season by posting a pair of 5-2 victories over Richmond and St. Francis Brooklyn Saturday at the Tose Family Tennis Center in Annapolis.

The doubles point between the Mids and the Spiders (1-2) came down to the third and final match to be completed. The set would go into a tiebreaker, with Richmond's duo of Jonathan Quenard and Dylan Trent posting a 7-3 win over Navy's tandem of Tyler Tossavainen (So., Fleming Island, Fla.) and Aries Wong (Fr., Bethesda, Md.) to give the Spiders the point.

Wong immediately bounced back from the loss by dropping just one game in defeating Quenard in straight sets at No. 6 singles to even the match at one point apiece. Walker Sims (Fr., Memphis, Tenn.) then gave Navy a 2-1 advantage with his 6-2, 6-1, victory over Caleb Troy at No. 5 singles. Blake Daniel (Sr., Overland Park, Kan.) made it three wins in a row for the Mids when he defeated Alex Hahn, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 3 singles.

Ethan Dunbar pulled the Spiders to within 3-2 with his 6-4, 6-3, win over Calvin Mark (Sr., Union City, Calif.) at the No. 1 flight, but Austin Jones (Jr., Dallas, Texas) outlasted Jacob Dunbar, who is ranked 15th in the Atlantic Region, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 2 singles to secure the fourth team point for Navy.

The remaining match saw Navy's Thomas Pecor (So., Houston, Texas) post a 5-7, 6-4, 6-1, victory over Canyon Teague at the No. 4 flight.

"It was a great win that could have gone either way," said Navy head coach Chris Garner. "We had some opportunities to win the doubles point but were unable to finish them off. We had a good start in singles. Blake, Aries and Walker were able to get quick wins to give us the lead. Calvin went down to a really good player at No. 1, and then we were down a set at both No. 2 (Jones) and No. 4 (Pecor), but each fought back really well to give us the opportunity to win. Then Austin was able to come up with a great win to clinch the match for us."

The second match of the day saw the Mids quickly win the doubles point from the Terriers (0-1). Navy's Nos. 2 -- Alex Gaines (Jr., Wilmington, N.C.) and Andrey Majkic (Fr., Jacksonville, Fla.) -- and 3 -- Krishna Jana (So., Seabrook, Texas) and Joshua Martin (Fr., Filey, Ala.) -- teams lost only one game between them in winning the two completed matches to give Navy a 1-0 advantage.

Gaines proceeded to not lose a game in defeating Andrea Proto at No. 4 singles, Martin lost one game in topping Bosch at No. 6 singles and Tyler Burnett (Sr., Fayetteville, Ga.) won a 6-2, 6-3, decision at No. 3 singles to guarantee the Mids the victory.

Majkic would go on to record Navy's fifth and final team point of the day with his 6-2, 6-1, victory over Milos Vukicevic at No. 5 singles.

Navy had great chances to win the remaining two matches, but both Tossavainen and Jana lost in third-set tiebreakers, Tossavainen by the score of 10-7 and Jana by the count of 10-8.

Each of the 12 Mids who took to the court Saturday won at least one match, with Daniel, Gaines, Majkic, Martin and Won each recording two wins.

"This is a great opportunity for our entire team to play," said Garner. "One of the best things about college tennis here at the Naval Academy is that they are supportive of the doubleheaders we have that allow all of our players to play. It gives every guy on our team the chance to grow and mature through competition and support of one another. I think the support of our athletic department to have that happen is one of the great attractions we have here."

Navy will continue its season and homestand with two more matches Jan. 31 at the Tose Family Tennis Center. The Mids will face East Carolina at 9 a.m. and Howard at 2 p.m.

"I think as the season progresses," said Garner, "we just want to keep trying to put our work in each week and grow as a team, as far as the type of competitors we are, as far as improving areas in each others games that can get better as the season progresses. The more we do that, the better team we will be and hopefully good things will happen because of that."
