ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy women's tennis team (2-1) fell to James Madison (2-0), 7-0, on Sunday afternoon at the Tose Family Tennis Center at the Brigade Sports Complex. James Madison won two out of three doubles matches to secure the doubles point and then won all seven singles matches.
"It wasn't a good match for us at all," said head coach Keith Puryear. "Not to take anything away from JMU, because they played very tough and they made us earn every single point. But we made way too many unforced errors and we lost a lot of big points because of those errors."
Navy senior Noelle Kaufmann and freshman Kristine Rojo posted a 6-3 win at No. 3 doubles over James Madison's Dylan Owens and Emily Bradshaw. Kaufmann and Rojo are now 2-0 as a doubles pairing this season.
James Madison's Sarah Khan and Rebecca Harris defeated juniors Sam Droop and Katie Porter, 6-4, at No. 1 doubles and Taylor Pinchoff and Rachel Nelson defeated Navy's Summer Ralston and Claudia Mackenzie at No. 2 doubles, 6-2, to claim the doubles point.
Navy pushed two of the six singles matches to a third-set tiebreaker. Kaufmann fell to Harris at No. 6 singles, 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-7) and freshman Amanda Keller fell to Owens at No. 4 singles, 1-6, 7-6 (7-5), 1-0 (10-5).
James Madison won the other four singles matches in straight sets.
The Dukes are now 2-1 all-time against Navy.
"We will learn from this and we have to get ready for a couple of pretty tough matches next week against Richmond and Villanova," said Puryear.
Navy will play at Richmond on Saturday at 5:00 PM and will host Villanova on Sunday at 2:00 PM.
