WORCESTER, Mass. - Senior Derek Vogel scored the game-winning goal as the Navy men's soccer team (6-4-1, 3-0-0 PL) defeated Holy Cross (3-4-4, 1-1-2 PL), 1-0, on the road at the Smith Soccer Stadium on Saturday evening.

Vogel, the team captain, notched the game-winning goal in the 11th minute as Navy took the early 1-0 lead over the Crusaders.

Following a corner kick by sophomore Daniel Zaremba, Holy Cross initially cleared the ball, but senior P.J. Suess took control and played a ball to the flank where Zaremba still was after the corner kick. Zaremba gained the end line and served a cross into the box that Vogel headed in for this third goal of the season.

"We had two 2-v-1 chances in the first half after it was 1-0 and if we could have buried one or both of those it would have made a big difference in the game," said head coach Dave Brandt. "We held on to that 1-0 lead for a long time."

The Navy defensive backline stood tall and senior Jackson Morgan made two saves to earn his fifth shutout of the season and the 13th of his career. Morgan ranks third in program history with his 13 career shutouts.

"We defended very well tonight," said Brandt. "I didn't think we were our sharpest otherwise, but we were strong on defense."

Navy outshot Holy Cross, 10-7, and held a 3-2 edge in shots on goal. Navy outshot Holy Cross in the first half, 7-3. Navy also led in corner kicks, 5-2. Senior Thomas Shiiba took a game-high three shots for Navy.

Vogel has a team-high 10 points this season on three goals and four assists.

Navy leads the all-time series against Holy Cross, 15-11-2, and has won four straight games against the Crusaders.

The Mids are the only team in the Patriot League that is currently without any losses or ties.

"Every Patriot League game is critical and to get three points in a league game is always important for us," said Brandt.

Navy is 18-1-2 in Patriot League matches since the beginning of the 2013 season.

The Mids will next play at Bucknell on Saturday, Oct. 17 at 4:00 PM.
