WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Navy men's soccer team (7-7-1, 3-3-0 PL) suffered a 3-0 loss at American (11-4-2, 4-2-1 PL) in rainy conditions at Reeves Field on Wednesday afternoon.
The shorthanded Mids suffered a third straight Patriot League loss after opening conference play at 3-0. Navy had players out due to both illness and injury on Wednesday.
"We got beat in all phases of the game today," said head coach Dave Brandt. "I certainly know we have a good team, but we need to get things turned around."
American's Vinny Barone scored in the 10th minute following a free kick by Joe Iraola. The Eagles then added a second goal when Nick Sifrin headed in a feed from Dale Ludwig just 71 seconds before halftime.
American's third goal came in the 77th minute when Panos Nakhid scored on a give-and-go from Iraola.
American outshot Navy, 19-11, and held a 7-2 edge in corner kicks.
American goalkeeper Dylan Hobert made five saves for his sixth straight shutout. He leads the Patriot League with nine shutouts this season.
Navy goalkeeper Jackson Morgan made four saves in the first half and sophomore Mac Burke stopped three shots in the second half in his first appearance of the season.
Navy senior Thomas Shiiba took five shots in the game and Sam Bascom took four.
American takes a slim 11-10-7 lead in the all-time series against Navy.
Navy will next play at Lafayette at 4:00 PM on Saturday. The Mids will then play Army West Point on Tuesday, Nov. 3 at PPL Park in Chester, Pa. in the Army-Navy Cup IV.
