Men's Soccer Rolls Past Lafayette, 4-0

Box Score Oct. 31, 2015

Box Score

EASTON, Pa. - The Navy men's soccer team broke out offensively with four goals in a 4-0 shutout win at Lafayette on Saturday evening. Navy improves to 8-7-1 overall and 4-3 in Patriot League play while Lafayette falls to 5-7-5 overall and 2-5-1 in conference play.

The four goals scored by Navy are its highest total since beating Appalachian State, 5-0, on Sept. 5, 2014. The Mids were in serious need of goal-scoring as the team had suffered three straight shutouts in league play.

"I think all aspects of the game were much better for us," said head coach Dave Brandt. "We are fighting a slew of injuries and had lost ourselves a bit in the last few weeks. We looked much better tonight and it was critical to get the three points."

Navy got on the board in the 18th minute when junior Sam Bascom chipped a ball forward to Daniel Zaremba. Lafayette goalkeeper Brad Seeber came off his line to try to break up the play, but Zaremba took possession and got past Seeber and had a wide-open goal to tap a shot into.

Zaremba scored his third goal of the season. The sophomore also scored Oakland and Lehigh this season.

In the 50th minute Navy struck again when Bascom served a corner kick into the box and senior Michael Parker headed it in for his first career goal. It was Bascom's second assist of the night.

Shortly going after ahead 2-0, Navy went a man-up as Ryan Egan was assessed his second yellow card of the game and Lafayette was forced to play the last 37 minutes with 10 men.

"It was a blow for them," said Brandt of the red card. "But the game is never over until it's over so for us to continue to defend and attack and put two more goals away was important."

Senior P.J. Suess tallied Navy's third goal of the game in the 78th minute. Suess got around a Lafayette defender and fired a shot to the right side of the net from 22 yards out. It was the second goal of Suess' career.

Navy's fourth and final goal came in the 87th minute when senior Jamie Dubyoski took away a failed Lafayette clear and served a ball to a cutting sophomore Aubrey Jones who headed the ball in. Jones scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season.

Senior goalkeeper Jackson Morgan and sophomore goalkeeper Mac Burke combined for Navy's seventh shutout of the season. Morgan made three saves while playing the first 80 minutes and Burke made one save in the final 10 minutes.

Navy outshot Lafayette, 12-8. Lafayette was given three yellow cards and a red card in the game.

Navy extends its all-time lead in the series against Lafayette to 20-16-4 and has won four straight games against the Leopards.

The Mids will next play Army West Point on Tuesday, Nov. 3 at PPL Park in Chester, Pa. in the Army-Navy Cup IV. The match was originally scheduled for Oct. 2 but was postponed due to poor weather. Tickets are available at comcasttix.com.
