CHICAGO, Ill. - The Navy squash team took the Windy City by storm in its opening weekend of play, winning three matches. The Mids scored a 9-0 win at Northwestern in its opener, followed by 9-0 sweeps against Western Ontario and the University of Chicago.
Eight Navy players in the lineup finished the weekend with 3-0 marks, while four freshmen captured their first collegiate victories. At No. 1, rookie Senen Ubina (Greenwich, Conn.) scored an 11-3, 11-5, 11-4 win against Northwestern's Peter Hahn, while Alex Patricolo (Southampton, N.Y.), the No. 4 player, earned his first win by way of a default after Michael Leonard bowed out with an injury following an 11-1 loss in the opening game. Rookie Dylan Sweeney (New York, N.Y.) posted an 11-4, 11-2, 11-2 win against Northwestern's Armaan Singh at No. 6, while fellow freshman Jamie Kjorlien (Greenwich, Conn.) dealt Shikar Soni of Northwestern an 11-4, 11-1, 11-1 loss at No. 8.
In addition to the four freshmen, sophomore Jack Herold (Chicago, Ill.), junior Randy Beck (Lafayette Hill, Pa.), junior Reed Whitney (Ladue, Mo.) and junior Will Walker (Scarborough, N.Y.) all put together 3-0 marks for the weekend. Team captain Bill Kacergis played the No. 5 spot against Northwestern and Western Ontario where he scored a pair of victories for the Mids before sitting out the Chicago match. He earned a win in perhaps the toughest match of the weekend. After jumping out to a 2-0 advantage against Western Ontario's Brian Hill, Hill came back to pull even with back-to-back wins (12-10, 11-9) in the third and fourth games. Kacergis capped the victory with a 12-10 game five win.
Navy's matches against Western Ontario and the University of Chicago were played at the newly-constructed MetroSquash Academic & Squash Center where the Mids also held a clinic for local youth between matches.
"This was a great trip for our team to take and thought we were able to get some good work in," said Navy head coach Craig Dawson. "Among the three matches there was some solid squash played."
The Mids return to action next weekend when they play host to a round robin tournament beginning Friday evening with a 7:00 pm match against Fordham.
