ANNAPOLIS, Md. - After opening its season by winning 14 consecutive matches, the 16th-ranked Navy squash team dropped its first match of the season on Friday evening at the Halsey Field House International Squash Courts. Seventh-ranked Penn scored a 9-0 victory over the Mids in what was the Quakers' season opener.
Although Penn won all nine individual matches, Navy pushed the Quakers to extra games in six of the nine, including the No. 1 spot. Sophomore Anders Larson won the opening game against Navy rookie Senen Ubina (Greenwich, Conn.), 11-8, but Ubina drew even with a matching 11-8 decision in game two. Larson edged out Ubina in the third game, 12-10, before taking the match in the fourth with an 11-2 victory.
Sophomore Jack Herold (Chicago, Ill.), who leads Navy in wins with 14, fell behind in his match at the No. 2 position with an 11-9 loss to Karim Tarek in the first game. Herold, however, bounced back to tie the match with a 13-11 victory in the second. Like the No. 1 match, Tarek was able to edge Herold in game three by a 12-10 count before posting the 3-1 victory with an 11-8 game four win.
In addition to Ubina and Herold, senior team captain Bill Kacergis (Malvern, Pa.), junior Reed Whitney (Ladue, Mo.) and freshmen Dylan Sweeney (New York, N.Y.) and Alex Patricolo (Southampton, N.Y.) dropped four-game matches.
Navy will look to get back on track on Sunday when it travels to New Jersey to battle eighth-ranked Princeton.
