ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy women's tennis team (6-3) defeated visiting Howard (1-4), 6-1, on Thursday afternoon at the Tose Family Tennis Center. This match was postponed from its originally scheduled date of Tuesday due to a snowstorm.
"I was really pleased with the effort today," said head coach Keith Puryear. "Howard is a very good team and they beat us last year. The doubles was a tooth-and-nail battle today, but we stuck around and were able to close it out. We showed the great depth that the Navy women's tennis program has today. We are trying to get everyone some match play. We want to let everyone get in there and mix it up and show what they can do and the team held true today."
Navy was able to win the doubles points by taking matches at No. 2 and No. 3. Junior Logan Antill and freshman Amanda Keller defeated Maame Osei and Jessica Josiah at No. 2 doubles, 8-7 (7-3) and senior Noelle Kaufmann and freshman Kristine Rojo defeated Audra Bell and Sajela Harlow at No. 3 doubles, 8-5.
Sophomore Summer Ralston was the first Mid to close out her singles match when she knocked off Josiah at No. 4 singles, 6-4, 6-4. Kaufmann then dispatched of Harlow at No. 6 singles, 6-2, 6-2.
Freshman Claudia Mackenzie clinched the team victory with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles over Osei.
Rojo would go on to defeat Bell at No. 3 singles, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 and in the last match to finish of the day, senior Sam Droop defeated Stacey Roherman at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 1-6, 7-5.
Droop, Rojo and Mackenzie each picked up their 10th singles win of the season on Thursday.
Puryear won his 550th college tennis match. He has 322 wins as a women's coach and 228 wins as a men's coach.
Navy will next host Seton Hall (9 AM) and Longwood (2 PM) in a doubleheader on Saturday.
