ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The 14th-seeded Navy squash team dropped a 7-2 decision to 11th-ranked Dartmouth Friday morning in its opener at the College Squash Association Team Championship hosted by Trinity College. It's the second straight year the Mids have met the Big Green in first round of the Hoehn Cup at the championship.

Navy entered the match with high hopes of avenging a regular-season loss to the Big Green in December that saw the Mids win four games, including the top two positions.

In Friday's tournament bout, senior team captain Andrew McGuinness (Merion Station, Pa.) scored an 11-5, 7-11, 13-11, 13-11 victory over Dartmouth freshman Alvin Heumann, who did not play in the regular-season meeting against the Mids. McGuinness is now 5-5 in matches played at the CSA Team Championship over his career.

Meanwhile, sophomore Reed Whitney (Ladue, Mo.) swept freshman Brian Giegerich, 11-8, 11-4, 12-10, after losing to Giegerich 3-0 during the regular season. Whitney, who is now 2-2 in CSA Team Championship matches, also won his opening-round match against the Big Green a year ago.

The Mids dropped two heartbreakers to Dartmouth, including a five-gamer by senior Jim Kacergis (Malvern, Pa.) who led his match against Kyle Martino, 2-0. Also falling in five games was freshman Jack Herold (Chicago, Ill.), who broke his ankle over the holiday break and fought hard to return to the court this week for the championship. Herold, who dealt Alexander Greer a five-game loss at the No. 2 spot in the first meeting of the year, was tripped up by sophomore Glen Brickman, 7-11, 12-10, 11-9, 8-11, 11-8.

The Midshipmen will work their way through the consolation bracket on Saturday when they battle 15th-seeded George Washington at 9:00 am. Navy scored a 6-3 decision over GW in mid-January on the Colonials' home court.
