Feb. 22, 2015 • Neville Kovacs Intercollegiate - 1st Round
GOODYEAR, Ariz. - While the snow continues to pile up on the East Coast, the Navy men's golf team opened the spring portion of its schedule on Sunday, competing in the 17-team Neville Kovacs Intercollegiate hosted by Loyola University and played at the Palm Valley Golf Course in Goodyear, Ariz. Sophomore Devin Terry (La Crosse, Wis.) shot par in the opening round to lead the Mids to a 15th-place tie with a 21-over par 309.
Utah Valley is atop the leader board after the first round of action with an 8-under par 280, followed by Missouri (-3) in second, DePaul (+2) in third, Connecticut (+3) in fourth and Loyola in fifth (+6). Missouri's Luigi Botta and Utah Valley's J.T. Timmons are tied for the individual lead with both players turning in a 5-under par 67 on Sunday.
Terry stands 17th on the leader board as one of four players in the tournament to shoot par. Rookie Thomas Fricke (Haymarket, Va.) stands 61st after posting a 5-over 77, followed by freshman Connor Tallman (Lake Oswego, Ore.) in 78th with a 79 (+7), senior August Jonas (Jacksonville, Fla.) in 90th with an 81 (+9) and senior Bryce Keene (Bakersfield, Calif.) in 97th with an 85 (+13).
"Devin played solid all day with three birdies and just three bogeys," said Navy Associate Head Coach Mike Burke. "He did a great job of positioning the ball off the tee and his short game was exceptionally sharp which enabled him to save par on several holes.
"Thomas and Connor also contributed with solid rounds highlighted by an eagle 3 for Connor on the par 5 fifth hole."
Action resumes at 8:20 am Pacific on Monday, while the Mids will be back on the links at 8:50 am playing alongside St. John's, Southern Illinois and Missouri State.
