ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Nine different Mids won at least one match on the day as the Navy men's tennis team recorded a pair of 5-2 victories over Morgan State and James Madison Sunday at the Tose Family Tennis Center in Annapolis. The two wins gives the Mids a 9-1 record on the season.
"It was a great day for the guys," said Navy head coach Chris Garner. "There were lot of competitive match aagainst two really strong teams, and the guys handled some adversity well in both of the matches. We had a lot of support; some kids came in from the Army-Navy Country Club and were really supportive, so I think it was a great experience for the guys."
The Mids opened play Sunday by losing just five games in sweeping the three doubles matches against Morgan State (0-5). Thomas Pecor (So., Houston, Texas) and Aries Wong (Fr., Bethesda, Md.) didn't drop a game in posting a win over Treajh Ferguson and Lucas Krinsinski at No. 2 doubles, then Navy's tandem of Blake Daniel (Sr., Overland Park, Kan.) and Calvin Mark (Sr., Union City, Calif.) combined for a 6-2 win at the No. 1 flight over Eric Ward and Duk Young-Park to give the Mids the doubles point.
Navy quickly won a trio of straight-set singles matches to jump in front of the Bears, 4-0, and secure the overall team victory.
Joshua Martin (Fr., Foley, Ala.) was the first Mid to finish as he didn't lose a game in defeating William Jay at No. 5 singles. Tucker Massie (Fr., Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) tallied Navy's third team point of the match with his 6-4, 6-1 win over Sagar Sathyanarayanan at the No. 6 flight. Earning the match clinching fourth point for Navy was Tyler Tossavainen (So., Fleming Island, Fla.) with his 6-4, 6-3 win over Ward at No. 1 singles.
Tyler Burnett (Sr., Fayetteville, Ga.) would record a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 win over Krinsinski at No. 3 singles to complete Navy's scoring.
Navy carried over its doubles lineup from the first match of the day into the second, and each of the three tandems were once again successful. Daniel and Mark recorded a 6-3 win over Miljan Ruzic and Sebastian Salinas at No. 1 doubles, with Andrey Majkic (Fr., Jacksonville, Fla.) and Tossavainen soon following with a 7-5 victory at No. 3 doubles over Stephen Goldman and Brett Moorhead to give the Mids 1-0 lead.
Pecor placed Navy's second team point on the scoreboard with his 6-1, 6-3 win over Maxi Branth at No. 3 singles. The Dukes sliced the margin in half when Ruzic won a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Tossavainen at No. 6 singles. Walker Sims (Fr., Memphis, Tenn.) made the score 3-1 in favor of Navy when he completed a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Moorhead at No. 4 singles. James Madison closed to within 3-2 of Navy as Robert Stirling defeated Daniel, 6-4, 7-6 (10-8) at the No. 2 flight. Mark would win his third match of the day and give Navy its fourth team point of the afternoon with his 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 victory over Salinas at No. 1 singles.
Rounding out the list of Navy's singles winners was Wong with his 6-0, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5) win over Goldman at No. 5 singles.
"When you are playing teams where there is not much differential in the levels, it is just going to be the small things (that determine the outcome)," said Garner. "How you handle someone who might be playing really well for a stretch and just kind of hanging around, or you wind up making a couple of errors and you can either get down or get yourself back up and come back stronger. I think right now the guys are doing a really good job of supporting one another and believing in one another and it is showing in very competitive times."
Navy will take to the road for the first time this season when the Mids play Saturday at UNC Wilmington.
