ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy baseball team fell on Wednesday afternoon at home to Georgetown by a score of 8-1 in a midweek matchup of the two nearby programs. The Mids (14-6) were never able to gain much traction, either offensively or pitching, on the day as the Hoyas (7-8) kept the pressure on throughout the contest at Max Bishop Stadium. A competitive 4-1 score was increased late by four Georgetown runs in the ninth inning.
"They beat us in every aspect of the game," exclaimed Navy head coach Paul Kostacopoulos. "They were better offensively, their pitchers did an outstanding job of getting ahead in the count and they didn't give us anything. All of their pitchers commanded the strike zone. They did everything correctly and they flat out beat us today."
Leading performers for Navy on the afternoon included Jett Meenach (So., Flower Mound, Texas), who pitched three scoreless relief innings and Stephen Born (Fr., Strafford, Pa.), who went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double as the starting leftfielder for the Mids.
After a quick first inning saw both teams go three-up, three-down, the visiting Hoyas jumped on the Mids' starting pitcher Kyle Condry (So., Highland Village, Texas) in the second inning for three runs on three hits, though a fielding error only made two of those runs earned.
Down 3-0, Navy responded in the bottom of the third inning with its only run of the game. Born notched one of two hits for the Mids in the frame as he beat out an infield single to reach with one out. Two batters later, Robert Currie (Jr., Atlanta, Ga.) stepped to the plate and recorded his team-leading 22nd RBI of the season with a single to left field to score Born.
Georgetown increased its lead back out to three runs in the next inning as back-to-back singles to lead off the frame quickly turned into another score.
From that point on with the score at 4-1, each team's bullpen settled in and hurled four straight scoreless innings from the fifth through the eighth. Meenach led Navy's effort with three scoreless innings of pitching. The righty sidearmer had to dance around a few dicey situations though, as he entered the game in the fifth with two on and no outs before eventually rolling Georgetown's Curtiss Pomeroy into an inning-ending double play. He completed his outing in the seventh with another double play, this time it was a line drive grab back at the mound and a spin and pick off of the runner at second base.
With his three scoreless innings on Wednesday, Meenach extended his streak to 9.2 straight innings dating back to March 4 versus Delaware State.
"Jett did a nice job especially when he came in during a jam in the fifth inning," remarked Kostacopoulos. "He helped keep the game close, but Georgetown never gave up control."
Georgetown's bullpen quartet of Jimmy Swad, Will Brown, Tim Davis and David Ellingson shutdown the Midshipmen's bats with just four hits and no runs over the final six innings.
The Hoyas tacked on four runs in the top of the ninth inning to make the score final at 8-1.
In the defeat, the Mids were outhit 14-6. Born was the lone Navy batter with multiple hits as he had a single and a double over his first two at bats. Other Mids with a hit on the afternoon included, Currie, Brad Borosak (Sr., Jupiter, Fla.), Sean Trent (Jr., Sorrento, Fla.) and Connor Deneen (Jr., Tustin, Calif.).
"That was good to see Born get some more action and have success," said Kostacopoulos. "You hope that today continues to build his confidence and that those results are something that he will repeat for us in the future."
Navy will wrap up its 14-game homestand with a four-game series versus Princeton this weekend. The series is set to begin on Friday with a single game at 3 p.m. before moving onto doubleheader action on Saturday beginning at 12 p.m. First pitch of the fourth game is scheduled for Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
