Navy's Stingy Defense Stifles American In 11-5 Win

March 18, 2015

Box Score

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy women's lacrosse team (9-1, 3-0 Patriot League) used a strong defensive effort, recording a program-best 19 caused turnovers in a 11-5 win over American (2-7, 0-3 PL) Wednesday evening at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.

"It was good to see how well our defense played despite our offensive struggles today," Navy head coach Cindy Timchal said. "Our entire defensive core continued to give our offense plenty of possessions and kept American out of rhythm to not allow them back into the game."

Navy's defense forced 19 of American's 26 total turnovers and kept the Eagles to 15 of 27 clearing opportunities. Senior Sarah George (Lutherville, Md.), junior Katie Gallagher (Bel Air, Md.) and freshman Jenna Collins (Clarksville, Md.) each recorded three caused turnovers. Senior goalkeeper Annie Foky (Charlottesville, Md.) tallied four saves on nine chances along with two caused turnovers and two ground balls.

Navy wasted very little time scoring the first two goals within 1:47 minutes of the game. Junior Codi Mullen (Wading River, N.Y.) scored the first goal at 28:31. Gallagher followed up with a goal 28 seconds later. She then forced a turnover in American's defensive end and dished to senior Lindsay Rheiner (Ivyland, Pa.) to grab an early 3-0 lead with 21:35 left in the half.

Senior Loren Generi (Bayport, N.Y.) facilitated Navy's next two goals, assisting the first to freshman Julia Collins (Clarksville, Md.,) and the second to Gallagher to push the lead to five, 5-0, with 17:50 remaining in the half.

Generi then won the following draw control and passed to sophomore Morgan Young (Baltimore, Md.), who setup a free position opportunity by drawing a foul. Upon the restart, Young dashed in and beat freshman goalie Rose Redfoot to extend Navy's lead to six, 6-0.

American responded off its own free-position opportunity from the stick of Jamie Silverman to cut the deficit to five, 6-1, with 13:22 remaining.

After Young stripped the ball from American's Madison Hoon in Navy's defensive end, George went coast-to-coast and tallied her first career goal to put Navy back up six, 7-1.

American's Jessica Wojciechowski came back with back-to-back goals in a span of 1:47 to bring the Eagles back within four, 7-3, with 7:53 left.

Navy capped off the first half with Generi dishing off to junior Kesley O'Brien (Massapequa, N.Y.) on a free-position attempt to bring the Mids' lead back up to five, 8-3.

Navy continued its defensive pressure as Julia Collins forced a turnover on an American clearing attempt and passed to Gallagher, who finished off the play and put Navy up six, 9-3.

Navy and American traded two goals each for the final 29 minutes of the game to end the game at 11-5. Navy extended its winning streak seven games and remained perfect in league play.

Navy held sizeable advantages over American in shots, 41-12, ground balls, 26-17, draw controls, 13-5 and clearing opportunites, 14-of-15 to 15-of-27. Gallagher (3g, 1a) and Generi (1g, 3a) paced Navy's offense with four points each.

Navy will begin a four-game road trip, beginning with Boston University on Saturday in Boston, Mass. Opening draw is set for 1 p.m. and can be seen live for free on PatriotLeague.TV.
