MORAGA, Calif. - Saint Mary's (Calif.) won a pair of close doubles matches and a trio of three-set singles matches to defeat the Navy men's tennis team, 6-1, Thursday at the Timothy Korth Tennis Complex in Moraga, Calif.

"There was a lot of energy on both sides," said Navy head coach Chris Garner. "It was a great match to be part of. We would have loved to have won it, but the experience of the guys being challenged at every position can only help us as we move forward."

The doubles portion of the dual began with Saint Mary's (3-9) No. 1 team of Samuel Bloore and Thomas Hunt posting a 6-4 win over Navy's (13-7) tandem of Blake Daniel (Sr., Union City, Calif.) and Calvin Mark (Sr., Overland Park, Kan.). The Gaels would secure the doubles point with a 7-5 win at the No. 3 flight by Jacob Lagman and Arthur Weber over Tucker Massie (Fr., Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) and Tyler Tossavainen (So., Fleming Island, Fla.).

The remaining match at the No. 2 flight had Navy's duo of Austin Jones (Jr., Dallas, Texas) and Aries Wong (Fr., Bethesda, Md.) holding a 3-1 advantage in a tiebreaker over James Markiewicz and Wil Martin.

"Doubles was exciting," said Garner. "All three matches were really close. We were in each of them until the very end."

After the Gaels won straight set singles matches at the Nos. 2 and 6 flights, Wong recorded a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Martin at No. 5 singles to cut the lead down to 3-1. Saint Mary's would clinch the dual with a 6-0, 5-7, 6-4 win by Weber over Mark at No. 1 doubles.

The final two matches also were extended in three sets, with the Gaels winning both of them in third set tiebreakers (played in place of a full third set) by scores of 10-7 at No. 4 and 10-8 at No. 3.

"We fell behind 3-0," said Garner, "but we were in the rest of the matches."

Navy will close out its spring break trip with a Friday match at Pacific.
