Women's Tennis Sweeps Rhode Island and Sioux Falls

March 19, 2015

Palmas del Mar, Puerto Rico - The Navy women's tennis team (14-6) swept Rhode Island (4-4), 4-3, and Sioux Falls (6-6), 7-0, on Thursday in a doubleheader on the team's Puerto Rico spring break trip. Navy went 3-0 in Puerto Rico this week and the team has won six straight dual matches.

Navy opened the day with the 4-3 win over Rhode Island. The Mids won the doubles point as senior Noelle Kaufmann and freshman Kristine Rojo won at No. 2 doubles and juniors Sam Droop and Mikaela Carlson were victorious at the No. 3 position.

Navy and Rhode Island each won three singles matches, but Navy's win in the doubles point proved decision for the 4-3 team win.

Freshman Amanda Keller won in straight sets at No. 4 singles over Elizaveta Sadovnikova, 6-3, 6-1, and freshman Claudia Mackenzie also won in straight sets at No. 6 singles over Nithila Asokaraj, 7-5, 6-2.

Keller's singles win against Rhode Island was her 24th of the season, which is tied for the second-most in a single season in school history. Additionally, Mackenzie's win against Rhode Island was her seventh straight singles victory of the spring season.

Droop held off Rhode Island's Kathleen Uy at the No. 2 singles position with a three-set victory for Navy. Droop defeated Uy, 6-1 in the opening set before Uy responded with a 6-4 second-set win. Droop then defeated Uy in the third set, 7-6 (7-3).

"Rhode Island was a hard-fought match," head coach Keith Puryear said. "I thought their team did a great job to even the match after losing the doubles point. Sam Droop's match was a topsy-turvy affair and was full of changes of momentum. I thought she played a solid tie-breaker to secure the win for Navy."

Navy then breezed by Division II Sioux Falls in the second match of the day, 7-0. Navy went 3-0 in doubles action to pick up the doubles wins and then swept all six singles matches in straight sets.

Junior Katie Porter won at No. 1 singles, sophomore Audrey Channell won at No. 2 singles and sophomore Allie Pavlansky won at the No. 3 position.

Senior Noelle Kaufmann won at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-0, while junior Mikaela Carlson and sophomore Rozel Hernandez won at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively.

"In the second match, we did a good job of maintaining focus and not letting Sioux Falls develop any momentum," said Puryear. "The team is now looking forward to a couple days of rest and then returning for the homestretch of our season."

Navy will next open Patriot League play at Lafayette on Saturday, March 28 at 1:00 PM.
