STOCKTON, Calif. - An arduous week for the Navy men's tennis team that saw them play five matches in six days came to an end Friday with a 4-0 loss to Pacific at the Hal Nelson Tennis Courts in Stockton, Calif.
Each of the three doubles matches were taut contests, with Pacific (3-13) winning the first two to be finished and holding the narrowest of leads over Navy (13-8) in the remaining match.
Daniel Alameh and Marlon Brand defeated Blake Daniel (Sr., Overland Park, Kan.) and Calvin Mark (Sr., Union City, Calif.) in a tiebreaker (7-3 in the breaker) to win the No. 2 doubles match, while Jose Chamba and Miguel Diaz posted a 7-5 win over Austin Jones (Jr., Dallas, Texas) and Thomas Pecor (So., Houston, Texas) at No. 1 doubles.
Alex Hamilton and Bernardo Oliveira held a 6-5 lead over Tucker Massie (Fr., Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) and Aries Wong (Fr., Bethesda, Md.) when their No. 3 doubles match was stopped due to the Tigers securing the doubles point.
"It was a tough doubles point," said Navy head coach Chris Garner. "It was very competitive and came down to the last few points at each of the flights. We just couldn't get on the board."
The Tigers then won each of the first three singles matches to be completed in straight sets to earn the overall victory. In one of the remaining matches, Mark held a 7-5, 4-5 advantage over Diaz at the No. 1 flight when it was stopped.
"Pacific looked fresher," said Garner. "Our guys have played a lot of tennis this week. Pacific also was on the top of their game."
Navy faced San Francisco, Fresno State, Arizona, Saint Mary's and Pacific during its week in California. The latter four opponents were played over the course of the last four days.
"This was a good trip for us," said Garner. "We were able to play some fantastic competition. As we move into the start of the Patriot League season, having played these opponents will have really helped us as a team and go a long ways in determining where we will end up at the end of the year."
After returning from California, Navy will open league play March 27 at Lafayette and March 28 at Lehigh.
