SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The first and second varsity crews from the 10th-ranked Navy heavyweight rowing program finished their final day of action at the San Diego Classic on Sunday with two fourth-place finishes. Racing on Mission Bay in San Diego, both Midshipmen squads competed in grand final competitions versus top-ranked national opposition.

The second varsity eight crew was the first to see action on Sunday as Navy was part of the Collegiate 2V Grand Final. The Mids finished the race with a time of 6:15.19 to rank fourth of six teams. California `A' won the event with a 5:58.06 result. Penn finished 6.96 seconds ahead of Navy in third place at 6:08.23.

In the premier collegiate race of the classic, the Collegiate Grand Final, the Mids once again finished in fourth place, though they were significantly closer to third place, as well as second place. Navy clocked in with a time of 6:05.63, just 1.22 second behind the third-place finishing boat of Stanford `A.' California `A' won the race at 5:53.12, while Penn `A' was second at 6:03.68.

Overall, the varsity and second varsity eight crews went up against four top-20 programs in Sunday's grand final action. California is ranked second nationally, while Stanford and Penn go back-to-back in this week's poll at 12th and 13th. Drexel, who finished in sixth place in the varsity eight race is 18th in the national standings.

Navy will be in action next Saturday with a road conference meet at Princeton. The Mids and the fourth-ranked Tigers will do battle for the Navy-Princeton Cup on Lake Carnegie beginning at 9 a.m.
