Navy Sweeps Marist and Towson in Women's Tennis

March 8, 2015

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy women's tennis team (10-6) swept Marist and Towson on Sunday at the Tose Family Tennis Center. Navy defeated Marist (0-5), 5-2, and later defeated Towson (7-5), 5-2.

"We really showed the depth of our team today in the two wins," said head coach Keith Puryear. "I'm very proud of our team. We faced some good competition today. Marist's record is deceiving because they have played some good competition and the Towson match was a dog fight. Towson is a much-improved team and they have some freshmen in key positions in their lineup and they have really upped the ante for their program."

Navy opened the day with its 5-2 win over Marist. Freshman Amanda Keller and sophomore Rozel Hernandez opened with an 8-0 win at No. 2 doubles over Sabrina Tahir and Elizabeth Brozovich. Navy then clinched the doubles point when Mikaela Carlson and Allie Pavlansky earned an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles over Katie Seitz and Nikki Rohan.

Hernandez was the first Mid to close out her singles opponent when she defeated Rohan at the No. 5 position, 6-0, 6-3. Carlson soon followed with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Brozovich at No. 6 singles.

After Marist cut Navy's lead to 3-2, sophomore Summer Ralston clinched the team win with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Callie Morlock at No. 3 singles. Freshman Claudia Mackenize then added another Navy victory at No. 2 singles with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Claire Schmitz.

Navy once again won the doubles point later in the day in its match against Towson. Juniors Katie Porter and Logan Antill defeated Nicole Shakhnazarova and Lucy Williams at No. 1 doubles, 8-2, and sophomore Allie Pavlansky and Keller defeated Cailey Easdale and Barbora Vasilkova at No. 3 doubles, 8-7 (7-1) to win the doubles point.

After clinching the team win against Marist, Ralston was the first Mid to earn a singles win against Towson. Ralston defeated Renate van Oorschodt at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-3.

Towson won at No. 4 singles and then at No. 2 singles before the Mids turned the tide by winning the last three matches.

Keller defeated Williams at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 6-1, and Antill clinched the team win at No. 1 singles over Sophie Lesage, 7-5, 6-3. Mackenzie then closed the doubleheader with a three-set win over Vasilkova at No. 5 singles, 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4.

Navy will next host Delaware on Thursday at 2:00 PM.
