Baseball Cruises to 13-2 Victory Over Delaware State

March 9, 2015

Final Stats

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy baseball team used a potent offensive attack by the top of its batting order, as well as a career-long outing by George Coughlin (So., Arvada, Colo.) to defeat Delaware State (0-9) in a Monday afternoon matchup at Max Bishop Stadium, 13-2. The Mids (10-4) received seven of their ten hits from the duo of Robert Currie (Jr., Atlanta, Ga.) and Brad Borosak (Sr., Jupiter, Fla.), while Coughlin held the Hornets' bats under control for just two hits over seven innings on the mound.

"The top of the order was outstanding," exclaimed Kostacopoulos postgame. "Currie and Borosak were locked in all day with five extra-base hits and six RBIs between them. The bottom of the order got on and then they drove them in. Those two were really our catalysts today."

"On the mound, we got a quality seven-inning start by George. He'd tell you he wasn't as sharp as he'd like to be, but at the same time he pitched with a lead and kept putting the ball in there. After we got a few runs early he did a good job of managing the game considering the score at the time."

Delaware State got on the scoreboard first as the visiting Hornets pieced together a run on a hit by pitch, double and sacrifice fly in the top of the second inning.

Down 1-0, the Mids responded loudly in the bottom of the third as they batted around and turned four walks, three hits and a wild pitch into six runs. After reaching base via back-to-back walks Ben McGrath (Fr., Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) and Travis Blue (So., Orange, Calif.) came in on one swing of the bat by Currie as he sliced a double down the left field line. Currie would linger on the bases until a Borosak single and an Adrian Chinnery (So., Wilmington, Del.) walk loaded the bases. Another free pass, this time to Connor Deneen (Jr., Tustin, Calif.) forced in Navy's third run. Stephen Born (Fr., Strafford, Pa.) then plated Borosak before Chinnery scampered in on a Chris Gonzalez wild pitch. With the score 5-1, Jack Keller (Sr., Ballston Spa, N.Y.) concluded the run scoring with a single to left field to drive in Born.

With their bats heating up, Navy sent nine hitters to the plate in the following inning to extend its lead out to a 10-1 margin. Back-to-back RBI triples by Currie and Borosak highlighted the offensive output in the fourth. A passed ball and an RBI single by Keller accounted for the Mids' four runs in the frame.

Delaware State stopped Navy's offensive run at 10 unanswered with a single score in the top of the fifth inning.

Unfazed by the Hornets' single run to make it 10-2, the Mids kept on scoring off as they notched two runs in the bottom of the fifth and one in the sixth. Two big swings accounted for the runs in each inning as Borosak connected for his second consecutive triple in as many innings in the fifth to score Blue and Currie before freshman Ben Lowe (Memphis, Tenn.) came off the bench as a pinch hitter and promptly deposited a Gabe Rivera offering deep up the hill beyond the left field wall at Max Bishop Stadium. Lowe's home run was the first hit by Navy at its spacious home park since 2013.

"That's always nice to see someone come off the bench and contribute," remarked Kostacopoulos on Lowe's home run. "You're always looking for players to come in and perform in game situations and he definitely did today. That's what we're trying to find out early; who are our guys that can come off the bench and be able to play."

With the score 13-2 and Coughlin retired from the contest, the Mids called upon Charlie LaMar (Sr., Clearwater, Fla.) and Borosak to close out the win. After a scoreless eighth inning by LaMar, Borosak made his first appearance on the mound in 2015. The two-way talent faced five batters in the top of the ninth and recorded a strikeout and two ground outs to clinch the ball game.

"That was encouraging," said Kostacopoulos of Borosak's appearance on the mound. "That's been a project that we've been working on for a while now and it was good to get his feet wet. We're still a ways away from having him out there regularly, but it was good to see him out there."

For the game, Navy outhit Delaware State, 10-3. Currie led the attack with a 4-for-5 showing at the plate. In his second four-hit output in as many days, Currie was just a home run away from the cycle as he collected a single, double, triple and another double in his four plate appearances. Borosak was close behind his top-of-the-order mate as he stroked two triples and a single for a 3-for-5 line. Both Currie and Borosak drove in three runs each. Keller (2) and Lowe (1) recorded the other three hits for Navy on the afternoon.

On the mound, Coughlin improved to 2-1 on the season with a final line of seven innings pitched, two hits, one walk and two runs allowed, while striking out five. Coughlin's previous longest outing of his career was two starts of five innings. His two hits allowed were also a career-best for fewest hits in an outing over four innings in length.

Navy will be in action again on Wednesday with a home contest versus Towson. The Mids and Tigers will do battle at Max Bishop Stadium beginning at 3 p.m.
