Heavyweight Rowing Kicks off G.W. Invitational with Three Wins

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- In the first of three head-to-head duels this weekend as part of the George Washington Invitational, the Navy heavyweight rowing team swept all three races versus Georgetown on Friday afternoon on the Potomac River in Washington, D.C.

"Today was a solid day for us," remarked head coach Rob Friedrich. "All of our boats competed well, but we hope to be even sharper tomorrow."

The Mids' day started off strong with a 1-2 finish in the third varsity eight race. Both Navy's third and fourth varsity crews came in ahead of Georgetown's third varsity boat. The Mids clocked in with times of 6:01.6 and 6:05.9 versus a 6:08.4 for the Hoyas.

In second varsity eight action, Navy defeated Georgetown by 5.9 seconds at 5:58.4 to 6:04.3. The Mids' first freshmen entry finished in third place at 6:05.4.

In the spotlighted first varsity eight race, Navy won by 1.9 second over Georgetown. The Mids finished the 2,000-meter course at a time of 5:47.3 versus a 5:49.2 mark for the Hoyas.

After the day's action, the Mids are in first place in the Oliver T. Carr Bowl point standings with 39 points. George Washington is in second place with 33.

Navy will be back with day two action at the Invitational versus Virginia at 10:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. against Holy Cross on Saturday.
