April 11, 2015

Final Stats

WEST POINT, N.Y. -- Army won the doubles point and the first three singles matches to finish to post a 4-0 victory over the Navy men's tennis team Saturday at West Point, N.Y., in the annual Star Match between the two programs.

"Army played really well today," said Navy head coach Chris Garner. "They had a good turnout of support to help them along. Our guys competed and fought hard, but Army was too good for us today. We have to quickly move on from today and turn our attention toward next week and the league tournament."

The Black Knights (16-8, 7-0 Patriot League) won the first two doubles matches to be completed to earn the first point of the day from the Mids (17-10, 3-1). Harrison McCormick and Grant Riechmann recorded an 8-5 win over Blake Daniel (Sr., Overland Park, Kan.) and Calvin Mark (Sr., Union City, Calif.) at No. 2 doubles, then Kyle Barnes and Austin McCasin combined for an 8-6 victory over Andrey Majkic (Fr., Jacksonville, Fla.) and Aries Wong (Fr., Bethesda, Md.) at the No. 3 flight to give Army the doubles point.

The remaining match at No. 1 doubles featuring Navy's Austin Jones (Jr., Dallas, Texas) and Thomas Pecor (So., Houston, Texas) against Army's Sam Lampman and Alex Van Velzer was knotted at 5-5 when play was stopped due to the doubles point being awarded.

Army took a 2-0 lead when McCormick tallied a 6-3, 6-3 win over Walker Sims (Fr., Mepmphis, Tenn.) at No. 5 singles, then increased its advantage out to 3-0 after Riechmann defeated Daniel, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 3 singles. Play was stopped after Lampman defeated Mark by the score of 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 at No. 1 singles.

In the remaining matches, Jones and Van Velzer were tied, 6-4, 4-6, 2-2, at No. 2 singles, Pecor held a slim 6-3, 5-7 lead on Caison Best at No. 4 singles and Barnes led Wong, 3-6, 7-5, 3-0, at No. 6 singles.

The Patriot League Tournament will begin Friday at Bucknell with quarterfinal round matches, the two semifinal round matches will be held Saturday and the championship match to determine the league's representative to the NCAA Tournament will be contested Sunday.

Seeding, which will configure the bracket for the eight-team tournament, will be determined in the next few days.
