Mids Claim Navy Spring Golf Invitational

April 12, 2015

ANNAPOLIS, Md. --  The Navy men's golf team claimed wins in five of its six matches against Lehigh on Sunday to earn a 5-1 victory over the Mountain Hawks and win the 2015 Navy Spring Golf Invitational played at the Naval Academy Golf Course.  Meanwhile, in the consolation bracket, Lafayette earned a 5-1 victory to take third place.

After dropping a tough match in Saturday's battle against Colgate, junior Garrett Moyer (Annapolis, Md.) came back to earn a 2 & 1 victory over Lehigh's Jack Russell in the opening match of the day.  His match was highlighted by driving the par-4 second hole and making an eagle 2.

Sophomore Devin Terry (La Crosse, Wis.) also bounced back following a loss on Saturday to beat junior Dave Olexson, 1 up.  The two were all square through 17, however a clutch two-putt par by Terry on the final hole secured the victory.

Navy rookie Ethan Mead (Charlotte, N.C.), who drained a putt on the 18th in Saturday's match against Colgate and forced sudden death, finished the weekend with a 2-0 record after defeating Lehigh's Zach Allinson, 1 up.  Allinson fought back from a 4-hole, front-nine deficit to make the match all even on the 17th tee.  Both players hit solid shots and made par on 17.  After two solid shots on the 440-yard ninth hole, Mead found himself facing a nine-foot downhill putt for birdie.  He sank the putt for the victory and gave the Mids a 3-0 lead in the competition.

Freshman Eric Terminello (White Plains, N.C.) controlled Lehigh newcomer Billy Johns throughout their match, and closed it out with a 40-foot birdie putt on the 16th green to take the match, 4 & 2, and clinch the team victory for the Midshipmen.

Lehigh's Carlos Kim cashed in on several birdies on the front nine to take an early lead over Navy senior Bryce Keene (Bakersfield, Calif.).  Still three down with four to play, Keene birdied the difficult 15th hole before driving the par-4 16th hole and making another birdie.  Keene, however, was unable to convert on the 17th hole and Kim prevailed, 2 & 1, for the Mountain Hawks' lone win of the day.

Senior August Jonas (Jacksonville, Fla.) battled junior Harley Abrams in the final match of the day.  Jonas gained an early 1 up advantage in what would be a back and forth battle and was able to carry that lead through 16 holes.  After an Abrams bogey on the 17th, Jonas' par putt was conceded, giving him a 2 & 1 win.

"This turned out to be an excellent weekend for golf with great weather, and a tricky, well-groomed venue," said Navy head coach Pat Owen.  "We are looking forward to springing back into action next weekend at NC State!"

The Mids will play their final regular-season tournament of the season next Saturday and Sunday when they travel to Raleigh, N.C. to compete in the Wolfpack Open.
