Men's Tennis Defeats Boston, Plays Sunday in Tournament Final

April 18, 2015

Final Stats

LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Momentum gained during a rally to win the doubles point carried over into singles play for the Navy men's tennis team and helped the Mids post a 4-1 victory over Boston U. Saturday afternoon in a Patriot League Tournament semifinal round match that was played on the Bucknell campus in Lewisburg, Pa.

"It was a really competitive match," said Navy head coach Chris Garner. "Just looking at the scores shows it was a well-fought match by both teams. We were fortunate to be on the winning side of it and now have the opportunity to play in the finals tomorrow."

Boston (7-7) claimed victory in the first doubles match to be completed against Navy (19-10). Jake De Vries and Jay Leelavanich recorded an 8-2 win over Tucker Massie (Fr., Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) and Walker Sims (Fr., Memphis, Tenn.) at No. 3 doubles to give the Terriers an early advantage. However, the Mids bounced back with wins in the remaining two matches to take the early 1-0 lead on the scoreboard.

First Blake Daniel (Sr., Overland Park, Kan.) and Calvin Mark (Sr., Union City, Calif.) combined for an 8-6 win over Stefan Lemire and Mario Sandoval at No. 2 doubles, then Austin Jones (Jr., Dallas, Texas) and Thomas Pecor (So., Houston, Texas) recorded an 8-4 win over Lucas Bombonatti and William Kwok at the No. 1 flight.

"The doubles matches were close ones," said Garner. "We were able to find a little momentum late in them to earn the doubles point."

The Terriers would tie the score early in the singles portion of the match when Bombonatti posted a 6-0, 6-3 win over Sims at No. 5 singles. Daniel soon gave Navy a 2-1 lead after he completed a 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory over Lemire at No. 3 singles. The Navy lead grew to 3-1 when Jones topped Leelavanich, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 2 singles. Aries Wong (Fr., Bethesda, Md.) closed out play on the afternoon when he defeated De Vries by the count of 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 at No. 2 singles.

"Four of the six singles matches went three sets," said Garner, "so they were close on every court."

In the remaining matches, Pecor was one point away from closing out a three-set win over Sandoval at No. 4 singles and Mark was leading Kwok, 4-2, in the third set.

The win by the No. 2 Mids over the No. 3 Terriers moves them into Sunday's championship match against top-seeded Army. The Black Knights advanced to Sunday's final with a 4-2 victory over No. 5 seed Bucknell.

Sunday's match will mark the seventh time in the last nine years and the 14th time in the Patriot League Tournament's 22 years that an Army-Navy pairing will take place in the championship match of the event. The Mids hold a 9-4 advantage over the Black Knights when the teams have faced each other in the tournament final and have a 9-5 record overall in the title tilt.
