RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Navy men's golf team improved 2 strokes over its opening-round 297 to place eighth at the Wolfpack Spring Open played Saturday and Sunday at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course in Raleigh, N.C. The Mids covered the 36-hole tournament with a 24-over par 592 in what was their final regular-season tournament of 2015.
NC State held an 8-stroke advantage going into the final round and doubled it, taking the 17-stroke win over Maryland with a 551 (276-275). The Terps shot par (284-824=568) for the tournament, while Francis Marion shot par in the final round to make the jump from sixth to third in the final standings with a 576. Penn placed fourth with a 579 (290-289), while George Mason rounded out the top five with a 581 (284-297). Â
Medalist honors went to NC State's David Cooke who was 10 under (132) for the tournament and used his 6-under 65 in the final round to beat teammate James Chapman. Chapman was 6-under heading into the final round, but turned in a 1-under 70 on Sunday to fall to second.
Navy shot a 13-over par 297 in the opening round and begin Sunday's competition in a tie with Temple. The Owls scored a 7-under 291 over the final 18 holes to push past the Mids who were 11 over and 24 over for the tournament.
Senior team captain August Jonas (Jacksonville, Fla.) shot par (71) in the final round to earn his sixth top-20 finish of the season with a 2-over par 144 to place 18th. Classmate Bryce Keene (Bakersfield, Calif.) was 3 strokes behind in 27th, shooting a 147 for the tournament and a 2-over par 73 in Sunday's final round. Sophomore Connor Tallman (Lake Oswego, Ore.) placed 34th with a 7-over par 149 (74-75), followed by freshman Thomas Fricke (Haymarket, Va.) in 47th with a 152 (76-76) and sophomore Devin Terry (La Crosse, Wis.) in 53rd with a 153 (76-77).
Meanwhile, freshman Eric Terminello (White Plains, N.Y.) placed 66th with a 159 (76-83) and junior David Won (Bothell, Wash.) finished 75th with a 613 (83-80) and the pair competed as individuals.
The Midshipmen return to action next weekend when they make the trek to Hamilton, N.Y. to partake in the 2015 Patriot League Championship.
