UMBC Knocks off Navy Baseball on Tuesday

April 21, 2015

Final Stats

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy baseball team fell by a score of 9-1 on Tuesday afternoon at Max Bishop Stadium versus UMBC. The Retrievers (17-15) led wire-to-wire over the Midshipmen (29-16) in the final home regular season contest for Navy.

Robert Currie (Jr., Atlanta, Ga.) and Sean Trent (Jr., Sorrento, Fla.) were the top offensive producers for Navy as each player registered two hits. On the mound, Colin Brady (Fr., Seneca, S.C.) provided the Mids with four innings of hitless relief over innings six through nine.

"Today was not a great day for us," remarked head coach Paul Kostacopoulos. "When never really got any of the three parts of our game going. Their pitcher did a good job of keeping us off-balanced early on and then their offense took advantage of some struggles by our pitching staff. We started to get some hits off their relievers late, but we were never able to string together a third or fourth hit to drive in runs."

"Colin was a highlight for us today and I was glad to see him come out of the bullpen and throw four solid innings. He could be an asset for us going down the stretch so it was important that he get back to finding success after a few subpar outings recently."

The visiting Retrievers came out swinging hot bats on Tuesday as they scored in each of the first four innings to spot themselves a 5-0 lead.

Navy finally broke through onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth inning and took advantage of two throwing errors by UMBC's shortstop, Kevin Lachance. Connor Deneen (Jr., Tustin, Calif.) reached on an error and came into score two batters later on a ground ball off the bat of Jack Keller (Sr., Ballston Spa, N.Y.).

With the score 5-1, the Retrievers increased their lead out to eight with four runs scored in the top of the sixth inning. Brady was summoned out of the bullpen to quell any further scoring by UMBC and promptly set down the opposition with three straight ground outs.

UMBC finally removed its starting pitcher Shane Vlasic from the game before the start of the sixth and Navy attempted to cut into the deficit with hits in each of the last four innings off Retriever relievers, but in each situation, the Mids were unable to piece together more than two hits in an inning.

Courtesy of three more innings of hitless relief from Brady versus UMBC, the game would go final at a 9-1 margin.

In the setback, UMBC outhit Navy, 10-6. Both Currie and Trent had two hits on the afternoon. Trent extended his lead in the national standings to 76 total hits. Sean Kamhoot (Fr., Gainesville, Fla.) and Ben McGrath (Fr., Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) notched the other two hits for the Mids as they both connected for doubles.

Brian Wikoff (So., Shrewsbury, N.J.) took the loss after starting and allowing three runs (two earned) over two innings on the mound. The southpaw struck out two Retrievers during his start.

Navy will now turn its attention to weekend Patriot League play with a four-game road series at Army West Point. Action between the Mids and Black Knights is scheduled to begin on Saturday at 12 p.m.
