Baseball Defeats Georgetown on the Road, 8-5

April 29, 2015

Final Stats

BETHESDA, Md. -- The Navy baseball team used an explosive first four innings of offense and seven innings of lights out bullpen work to score an 8-5 road victory over Georgetown on Wednesday night. The Mids (33-17) scored all eight of their runs in their first four innings of play and then saw a quartet of relievers shut down the Hoyas (22-19) on their way to the win at Shirley Povich Field.

Offensively, the top five hitters in Navy's lineup combined for nine hits and all eight of the team's RBIs. The nation's hit leader, Sean Trent (Jr., Sorrento, Fla.) led the Mids on Wednesday with three more base hits, while Leland Saile (So., Land O'Lakes, Fla.) and Sean Kamhoot (Fr., Gainesville, Fla.) both had three RBIs.

On the mound, the relief quartet of Brian Wikoff (So., Shrewsbury, N.J.), Andrew Bartek (Jr., Jefferson, Ga.), Sam Sorenson (Jr., Etters, Pa.) and Jett Meenach (So., Flower Mound, Texas) held Georgetown to just four hits and one unearned run over the final seven innings of play.

"I thought tonight was a great team win for us," remarked head coach Paul Kostacopoulos. "The top five guys in our order all found a way to contribute offensively, whether it was getting a big hit or getting on base. They did a really good job."

"Our relievers were outstanding. I thought they came into an unstable and offensive game and really settled it down quickly. They all did a really good job in a ballpark that is prone to some very offensive contests."

The Mids jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first innings as Robert Currie (Jr., Atlanta, Ga.) led off with a single before eventually coming in on a sacrifice fly by Kamhoot.

The advantage didn't last long as the host Hoyas put up four runs in the bottom of the second as their centerfielder Beau Hall came through with a three-run home run.

Down 4-1, Navy immediately fought back with a big third inning that saw the Mids bat around and plate six runs. Navy's first five batters reached in the third before Georgetown was able to record an out. Trent drove in the first run on a walk before Kamhoot stepped up and scored two on a single through the left side of the infield. Saile capped the frame with a deep three-run home run out over the left-center field fence.

"Leland's three-run home run was really big," said Kostacopoulos. "Being down 4-1 and coming right back with six runs in our next inning was huge. That allowed our relievers to pitch with a lead and go on to hold that lead over the rest of the game."

With the score 7-4, the Mids scored their final run of the game in the top of the fourth as Trent drove in Brad Borosak (Sr., Jupiter, Fla.), who had earlier shot a triple into the right field corner.

Strong relief pitching by both teams would tell the story of the final two-thirds of the game as the offenses dried up to the tune of two hits for Navy and three hits for Georgetown. At one point for the Mids' pitching staff, they held 16 straight Hoya batters without a hit. Wikoff was the first Navy hurler out of the bullpen and the sophomore lefty went two innings with a strike out of the side in the fourth. Bartek followed Wikoff with three hitless innings in the fifth through seventh before Sorenson came in for the eighth.

Georgetown notched an unearned run off of Sorenson in the bottom of the eighth to conclude the game's scoring at 8-5. Meenach closed out the ninth for his fourth save of the season.

For the game, Navy outhit Georgetown, 10-7. Trent (3), Currie (2) and Saile (2) all had multiple hits for the Mids on the day.

Wikoff earned his first career victory with two scoreless innings in relief of Colin Brady (Fr., Seneca, S.C.).

Navy will next be in action on Sunday with a single home game against Chestnut Hill College. First pitch between the Mids and Griffins at Max Bishop Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m.
