Baseball Drops Sunday Doubleheader to Holy Cross

April 5, 2015

Final Stats

WORCESTER, Mass. -- The Navy baseball team closed out its four-game Patriot League road series at Holy Cross with a pair of setbacks versus the host Crusaders. The Midshipmen (22-12, 5-3 PL) fell in game one, 9-1 before losing game two by a score of 5-1 to the Crusaders (13-16, 7-1 PL). Navy fell victim to hot hitting by Holy Cross throughout the day as the Crusaders notched 24 hits versus Midshipmen pitching.

"They beat us in every facet of the game," remarked head coach Paul Kostacopoulos. "They pitched better than us, they hit better than us and played better defense than us. They did a really good job of staying consistent and getting production throughout their lineup."

Leaders for Navy during the doubleheader included, Logan Knowles (Fr., Port Orchard, Wash.) and Sean Trent (Jr., Sorrento, Fla.) on offense and Charlie LaMar (Sr., Clearwater, Fla.) and Jett Meenach (So., Flower Mound, Texas) on the mound. Both Knowles and Trent had two hits and an RBI, while LaMar and Meenach gave Navy five innings of combined one-run relief.

"Logan was a bright spot today and continues to improve," said Kostacopoulos. "He's done a nice job at third base and we just need to continue getting more out of him and help him get even better. Hopefully he can carry that growth throughout the rest of the season."

Navy ran into a hot-hitting Holy Cross squad in game one as the Crusaders had hits in every one of their six innings and scores in four of the six. That efficiency led an early 4-0 lead for Holy Cross through two innings. Navy responded with a single run in the top of the third as Travis Blue (So., Orange, Calif.) led off the frame with single to right field. After a wild pitch moved him into scoring position, Trent plated Blue with a single to left field.

With the score at a three-run margin at 4-1, Holy Cross closed out the game with five unanswered scores to win, 9-1. In the setback, the Mids were outhit 14-7. Currie and Trent each recorded two hits in the contest.

Stephen Moore (Sr., Roswell, Ga.) took the loss for Navy as he gave up six runs on 12 hits and a walk over four innings pitched. LaMar hurled two innings of scoreless one-hit relief.

In the second game, Holy Cross scored early again as the host Crusaders notched two runs in the bottom of the first inning off of starter Kyle Condry (So., Highland Village, Texas). After that opening hiccup, Condry settled down and held his opponents off the scoreboard over the next four innings. Between the second and fifth frames, the sophomore struck out three Crusaders and scattered three hits.

In the bottom of the sixth, Holy Cross added three runs to expand its lead out to 5-0.

Navy responded in its next at bat, as Leland Saile (So., Land O'Lakes, Fla.) turned a one-out hit by pitch into a run after singles by Stephen Born (Fr., Strafford, Pa.) and Knowles. The freshman third baseman registered the RBI on a base hit through the right side of the infield.

The game would go final by that 5-1 margin as Holy Cross' starter Brendan King finished it off to record the complete game five-hitter. Navy was outhit 10-5. Five separate Mids notched hits in the concluding game of the series.

Condry was saddled with the loss as he allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits and no walks over five-plus innings. He struck out four before giving way to Jett Meenach (So., Flower Mound, Texas), who finished the game with three innings of three-hit one-run ball. The sidearm reliever struck out three Crusaders in his outing.

Navy will be back in action on Wednesday with a road matchup at Maryland Eastern Shore. First pitch between the Mids and Hawks is slated for 3 p.m. in Princess Anne.
