Seven Navy Standouts Named to PL Baseball 25th Anniversary Team

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Seven former Navy baseball players were announced on Wednesday as members of the Patriot League Baseball 25th Anniversary Team. Marcus Lee ('94), Steve Mauro ('95), Toby Moore ('95), Brian Bernth ('96), Toph Lake ('98), Shane Groover ('00) and Mitch Harris ('08) were among the 25 baseball players honored on the silver anniversary team.

Brian Bernth - Bernth was named the Patriot League Player of the Year as a junior in 1995 and earned three All-League honors in his career, with first-team status in his final two years. He also helped the Mids to great team success as Navy won the Patriot League title in both 1994 and 1995. Bernth was selected to the Patriot League All-Decade Team and is fourth in League history with 16 career triples.

Shane Groover - Groover dominated on the mound and is one of two student-athletes to earn the Patriot League Pitcher of the Year award three times, doing so in consecutive seasons from 1998-00. He earned first-team All-League honors in each of the seasons and led Navy to consecutive League titles in 1998-99 and three straight regular-season crowns from 1998-00. Groover is tied for second in League history in wins (25) and is sixth in strikeouts (237).

Mitch Harris - Harris had an outstanding career that included the Patriot League Pitcher of the Year award in 2006 and All-America honors in both 2006 and 2007. He earned a total of three All-Patriot League nods in 2006 and 2007, and stands in second place in League history in strikeouts (291) and sixth in ERA (2.51). Harris was a 13th-round selection of the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2008 MLB Draft, and made his debut in the major leagues with the team this season.

Toph Lake - Lake earned All-Patriot League status in each of his four seasons, with first-team honors in both 1996 and 1998. He finished his career by winning the Patriot League Player of the Year award in 1998, and led Navy to the League title that season as well as in his freshman campaign in 1995. He is the Patriot League all-time leader in triples (20) and in the top 10 in hits (226), and is also Navy's all-time leader in runs scored (153).

Marcus Lee - Lee had a great two years in the Patriot League, winning the Player of the Year honor in both 1993 and 1994 and helping Navy to the League title in the latter season. Lee is a member of the Patriot League All-Decade Team and remains the all-time leader in batting average (.385) among players who have completed their career. Lee is also the school's leader in home runs (29) and RBIs (178) and ranks in the Patriot League top 10 in each category.

Steve Mauro - Mauro earned first-team All-Patriot League honors in each of his three seasons, and led Navy to the League title in both 1994 and 1995 with a Tournament MVP honor in the former year. Mauro also made the Patriot League All-Decade Team. He finished his career with a .355 batting average and 43 doubles.

Toby Moore - Moore had an impressive career on the mound for the Mids, which included a Patriot League Pitcher of the Year award in 1995. He was named to the first-team All-Patriot League squad in both 1994 and 1995, and helped Navy win the League title each season. Moore was selected to the Patriot League All-Decade Team, and is the League's all-time leader in complete games (24) while ranking in the top 10 in wins (21).

The group of 25 total honorees combined to win 27 Patriot League Player or Pitcher of the Year awards, with 21 players earning one of the two awards. Nine of the Anniversary Team members were named All-Americans in their career, seven were members of the Patriot League All-Decade Team (1990-00) and 13 were selected in the Major League Baseball (MLB) Draft. Of the 25 Patriot League champions, 13 featured at least one member of the Anniversary Team on the squad.

The Patriot League is releasing 25th Anniversary Teams throughout the month of August for each sport that has been sponsored by the League since it became an all-sport conference beginning in the 1990-91 season. In addition to the 25th Anniversary Teams, coverage throughout the 2015-16 season will focus on former student-athletes and top stories in the history of the Patriot League.
