Women's Tennis Opens Season at Stony Brook Invitational

STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- The Navy women's tennis team opened the 2015-16 season by competing at the Stony Brook Invitational. Navy won 21 singles matches and five double matches over the course of the weekend. This was the seventh straight year Navy opened its fall season by competing at Stony Brook.

"We started off the year pretty well in this event and it might have been one of our more successful showings at Stony Brook," said head coach Keith Puryear. "Some of our goals for this weekend were to try to get the freshmen some experience and to also get the upperclassmen back in the swing of things and I think we accomplished that. There are always some things we can improve upon but it was a good start for us."

Sophomore Amanda Keller advanced to the semifinals of the "A" singles draw. Keller defeated Bowdoin's Joulia Likhanskaia, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4, in the first round and then beat St. John's Anna Morozova in the quarterfinals, 6-4, 6-0. Keller fell to Fairleigh Dickinson's Shreya Pasricha in the semifinals, 6-1, 6-2.

Freshman Josie Rogers advanced to the semifinals of the "C" singles draw and freshman Catalina Rico won three matches in the "C" backdraw. Rogers beat Fairleigh Dickinson's Katarina Pavlovic in the first round, 1-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-6) and then beat Army West Point's Sera Martorelli in the quarterfinals, 6-0, 6-2. Rogers fell to St. John's Jaide Collins in the semifinals, 6-1, 6-0.

Rico fell in the first round to St. John's Stephanie Elgegren, 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (10-7), but then went 3-0 in the backdraw. Rico defeated Army West Point's Julian Mok, 8-2, Hofstra's Giulia Leone, 8-1, and Stony Brook's Becky Shtilkind, 8-5.

Navy will next host the Bill and Sandra Moore Invitational from Sept. 18-20 at the Brigade Sports Complex.
