SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- A poor hitting effort by the Navy volleyball team led to the Mids dropping a three-set decision to Buffalo Saturday night in Syracuse, N.Y. The Mids (2-9) lost a 25-18, 25-17, 25-21 decision to the Bulls (1-9).
"It was a very, very disappointing loss," said Navy head coach Larry Bock. "It was a myriad of things: we were outhit, outdug, outblocked and outserved. Just an imprecise effort by us against a team that was really ready to play. I wish we could start this match over."
Buffalo notched just one more kill (38-37) and two more digs (31-29) than Navy did, but the Mids recorded 23 attack errors to just 11 for the Bulls. That led to Buffalo, which held an 8-2 advantage in blocks, posting a .318 attack percentage to Navy's mark of .136. Additionally, Navy committed eight service errors to five for Buffalo.
Navy allowed big runs of points to Buffalo in each of the first two sets. Buffalo used a 5-0 run in the first set to build a 21-15 lead, then ran off six consecutive points to build a 13-7 cushion in the second set. The third set was tied at 18-18 before Buffalo took a 20-19 lead. The Bulls promptly posted back-to-back points to give them just enough breathing room over the Mids.
Navy will play a pair of matches Sunday in Syracuse. The Mids will face the tournament-host Orange at 10 a.m. and then New Hampshire at 4 p.m.
