ANNAPOLIS, Md. â€"â€" The Navy men's tennis team concluded play at the Joe Hunt Invitational Sunday in Annapolis. The Mids combined to post a 19-20 record in singles and an 8-6 mark in doubles.
The field, which consisted of players from 12 teams, competed in five singles flights and three doubles flights over the course of the last three days. This inaugural event paid homage to Joe Hunt, a 1942 graduate of Navy who won both the intercollegiate (NCAA) and USTA National (U.S. Open) titles before losing his life in a training accident in 1944. He was posthumously inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
Play was halted Sunday as Joe Hunt Court was dedicated at the USNA.
A trio of Mids accrued three singles victories during the tournament. Joshua Martin (So., Foley, Ala.) posted a 3-1 record while competing in the E flight, as did Walker Sims (So., Memphis, Tenn) who was entered into the B flight. Rounding out the trio was Tucker Massie (So., Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) with his 3-2 record in the C flight.
In doubles, both Navy duos of Austin Jones (Sr., Dallas, Texas) and Thomas Pecor (Jr., Houston, Texas) in the A flight and Parker Hayslett (Fr., Clearwater, Fla.) and Krishna Jana (Jr., Seabrook, Texas) in the B flight compiled 3-1 records.
"It was great," said Navy head coach Chris Garner of the weekend. "To be able to start this event, have mother nature help us out to get a lot of tennis in for all of the teams here, especially for our guys in this way, hopefully it is the start of a great fall."
Navy will continue its fall slate of tournaments Oct. 15-19 at the ITA Regional Championship.
