ANNAPOLIS, Md. â€" The Navy men's tennis team dropped two matches on the opening Saturday of the spring season, falling at Penn early in the day and suffering a close loss to Saint Francis U. Saturday night at the Tose Family Tennis Center in Annapolis. The Mids were defeated by Quakers, 7-0, and fell narrowly to the Red Flash, 4-3.
"Penn really came out quickly in doubles and got some big leads," said head coach Chris Garner. "In singles, I was really impressed with Andrew Hicks coming in as a walk-on to compete against a team that's as strong as Penn. He's improved a lot since he came on the team, and he has a lot of passion and wants to get better."
Penn won each of the three doubles matches to earn the doubles point against Navy. Included among those three results was the match at the No. 2 flight where Navy's Krishna Jana and Tyler Tossavainen lost to Matt Nardella and Thomas Spratt in a tiebreaker. The Quakers won the breaker by the score of 7-5. A pair of singles matches also were extended into third sets as both Austin Jones at the No. 1 flight and Hicks at No. 6 lost to their respective foes by the identical score of 10-4 in the tiebreaker.
Navy's match against Saint Francis U. was a very close one that had tight contests at nearly every flight. The Red Flash won the first two doubles matches to be completed to earn the doubles point. The Mids responded at the start of singles as Andrey Majkic won at the No. 2 flight and Alex Gaines picked up the win at No. 3 â€"â€" both in straight sets â€"â€" to give them a 2-1 advantage. Back came the Red Flash to record wins at Nos. 4, 1, and 5 singles, respectively, to take a 4-2 lead and secure the overall match win.
"Andrey played a great match," said Garner. "He was really aggressive, had a lot of energy and really steamrolled."
Navy continues the dual season on Saturday, Jan. 23 with a road match at East Carolina in Greenville, N.C., and a home match against Saint Francis Brooklyn.
