AMHERST, Mass. - Facing one of the most challenging schedules during the Craig Dawson era, the 15th-ranked Navy squash team snapped a six-match skid against nationally-ranked foes to win three matches over the weekend. The Mids upset #14 Williams, 5-4, on the Ephs' home court, while moving on to defeat #22 Amherst, 8-1, also on its home court. Navy, who is now 17-6 on the year, closed out the weekend with another hard-fought 5-4 victory against #17 Bates.

"I'm really proud of the way our team played this weekend," said Dawson, who is in his 16th season leading the Midshipmen. "The lower half of our ladder has stepped up and played well and they certainly came up big for us in the wins against Williams and Bates."

Navy freshmen Jamie Kjorlien (Greenwich, Conn.) and Alex Patricolo (Southampton, N.Y.) both captured wins in a team loss to George Washington earlier in the week before posting wins in all three matches over the weekend to post a 4-0 mark for the week. Kjorlien won a five-game decision over Varun Sharma Friday night at the No. 7 spot to help lead the Mids to the victory over Williams. He came back to post a 3-1 win against Amherst's Lucas Sheiner and finished the weekend with a 3-0 sweep against Spencer Burt of Bates at No. 8.

Patricolo, meanwhile, produced 3-0 victories against all three of his opponents, but was pushed to the limit against Bates' Carlos Ames. Game three was won by Patricolo by a score of 18-16.

Sophomore Sam McCartney (Chicago, Ill.) has played the exhibition or No. 10 spot for most of the season, but was called upon this weekend after team captain Bill Kacergis (Malvern, Pa.) injured his leg in the George Washington match on Wednesday. McCartney defeated Williams' William Rugiero in three games at the No. 9 spot and followed up with a 3-0 victory against Amherst's Thorton Ellis. McCartney is now 6-0 on the year and 12-6 for his career.

Junior Randy Beck (Lafayette Hill, Pa.), freshman Dylan Sweeney (New York, N.Y.), freshman Senen Ubina (Greenwich, Conn.) and junior Will Walker (Scarborough, N.Y.) put together 2-1 records over the weekend. Sweeney dropped a heartbreaking five-game match against Michael Petrick of Williams. After finding himself down 2-0, the newcomer fought back to even the match and force a fifth game. Petrick just edged Sweeney by a 13-11 count. Sweeney bounced back to get a 3-0 win against Amherst and a 3-1 victory in his match against Bates.
