ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy women's tennis team (3-1) took to the courts on Friday against Georgetown (2-1) and defeated the Hoyas 4-3 at the Tose Family Tennis Center at the Brigade Sports Complex.
"This was a tough match, as the Navy/Georgetown matches always are," said head coach Keith Puryear. "This was a good win for us. They really pressed us across the board and I really like the way we responded."
Navy was able to grab the doubles point 2-1 with victories by the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams. In singles, four of the six singles matches went to three sets in what was a very tight match overall. Sophomore Amanda Keller was able to grab a straight set victory at No. 1 singles over Victoire Saperstein, 6-3, 6-2.
Senior Sam Droop was able to rally back to win in three sets (5-7, 7-5, 6-4) over Sophia Barnard in No. 4 singles as she fell behind after the first set and faced a match point in the second set. Senior Logan Antill, at No. 5 singles, also fought back to win 7-5 in the third set after dropping the second set of her match against Sara Swift (6-2, 4-6, 7-5).
"I think Georgetown really did a good job of fighting and snatching the momentum after doubles from us," said Puryear. "They immediately came out with a lot of energy and changed the tempo of the match. I'm proud of the team and the way we competed and fought back."
Navy has won three straight matches and improves to 2-1 in the all-time series against the Hoyas.
The Mids return to action tomorrow when they host Saint Joseph's in Annapolis at the Tose Family Tennis Center at 5:00 pm.
On Sunday, Navy's squad will be taking on Boston U. in Boston and Villanova in Annapolis. Both matches are scheduled for 10:00 am.
