Final Stats

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy men's tennis team posted a pair of victories Saturday at the Tose Family Tennis Center in Annapolis. The Mids began the day by recording a 6-1 victory over Howard and closed it by topping Saint Joseph's by the same score.

In the first match of the day against Howard (0-5), the Mids (2-3) were able to clinch the doubles point with victories in the first two matches to finish. The first match to finish was a 6-0 victory by the No. 2 duo of Joshua Martin (So., Foley, Ala.) and Parker Hayslett (Fr., Clearwater, Fla.) over the Howard pairing of Myron Davis and Laguna Foster, Jr. Navy's No. 3 tandem of Cameron Kirkpatrick (Fr., Menlo Park, Calif.) and Andrew Hicks (Fr., Haddon Heights, N.J.) then posted a 6-3 win over Hawkins Owens IV and Spencer Kelly to give the Mids the point.

"We had a bumpy start to the doubles match at No. 3, but really settled down and played some good tennis to win the set and clinch the doubles point," said head coach Chris Garner. "At No. 1 we had a couple of opportunities to close it out, but Howard played extremely well when they were on the brink of defeat."

In singles, Navy was able to grab straight-set victories in four of their six matches, highlighted by Tyler Tossavainen (Jr., Fleming Island, Fla.) claiming a win over Owens without surrendering a game. Tucker Massie (So., Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) also won a 6-4, 6-4 decision at No. 1 singles over Ismael Kaouache.

"After losing such a close fought doubles set (7-6 with the score being in the tiebreaker), Massie and Tossavainen came right back out in singles and set the tone for the team with their good play and positive energy," said Garner. "Both Cameron (Kirkpatrick) and Andrew (Hicks) got off to great starts in singles, with Cameron winning convincingly at No. 6."

Against Saint Joseph's (0-1), Navy took all three doubles matches and only lost two sets overall in what was a strong performance by the Mids. The doubles teams all jumped out to early leads in their sets and led over the remainder of play on their way to wins.

"All the doubles teams came out playing aggressively, which created a lot of opportunities for all three teams," said Garner. "By capitalizing on their opportunities they were able to secure the lead."

In singles, Navy's Nos. 1-5 players all won their matches in straight sets. This included Austin Jones (Sr., Dallas, Texas) winning at No. 1 singles over Renier Moolman by a 6-2, 6-3 count and Aries Wong (So., Bethesda, Md.) posting 6-1, 6-1 win over Kyle Chalmers at the No. 3 flight.

"Aries played a very strong match," said Garner. "He was able to turn the tables against Chalmers who had defeated him last fall. Winning five of the six singles matches in straight sets was impressive against a very competitive Saint Joseph's team."

The Mids take to the road next weekend for matches on Saturday, Feb. 6 at Princeton and Sunday, Feb. 7 at Columbia, as well as play host to UMES on Feb. 7.
