ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy women's tennis team (5-2, 0-1 PL) played three matches on Saturday and Sunday and were able to grab wins in two of the three contests. Navy took a 5-2 win over Saint Joseph's (0-1), a 6-1 victory over Villanova (0-1), and fell to Boston U. (2-0) on the road by a score of 7-0.
"This was a very positive weekend," said head coach Keith Puryear. "To play four teams at the level that we did and to come out of it at 3-1 says a lot about our team and where we are."
In the Saint Joseph's match, the Mids were able to claim all three of the doubles matches, led by the No. 1 doubles pairing of junior Summer Ralston and freshman Josie Rogers, who won a 7-6 (10-8) match over Claire Minnoe and Alex Zachem.
Sophomore Kristine Rojo won in straight sets at No. 1 singles over Minnoe by the score of 6-4, 6-4. The closest singles match of the day came in No. 5 singles, where Ralston won the first set 6-2, but fell 3-6 in the second. She then rallied back to win the third set 6-2.
"I am proud of the way the team played at home," said Puryear. "Saint Joseph's and Villanova are two very good teams those are good wins."
Against Villanova, the Mids dropped the doubles point 2-1, with the No. 3 doubles team of junior Audrey Channell and freshman Sabrina Jiang claiming the only doubles win over Victoria Martinez and Aphrah Brokaw.
After falling in doubles, Navy went on to win in straight sets across the board in singles. Rojo, in No. 2 singles, and Rogers, in No. 3 singles, only lost three games combined in their victories over Villanova's Martinez and Samantha Schafer.
Navy's lone road match against Boston U. concluded in a 7-0 defeat.
"It wasn't the result we were looking for," said Puryear. "There were some takeaways from today and I liked the way we competed in doubles. We really went after it."
In doubles, the Mids were competitive in each match and won at least three games in each match.
Boston U. grabbed all but one of the singles matches in straight sets despite the efforts of sophomore Amanda Keller, at No. 1 singles, who fell 6-4, 6-3 to Johanna Hyoty. The tightest singles match was at No. 6 singles where senior Katie Porter was able to grab the first set against Kim McCallum 7-5, but eventually fell in the third-set tie-break by the score of 11-9.
"In singles we were in most of the matches," said Puryear. "At times, we needed to be better with our execution and at other times, Boston just hit really good shots."
The Mids take the courts next weekend when they host Longwood at 10:00 am and George Mason 3:00 pm on Saturday, Feb. 6 and James Madison at 9:00 am on Sunday, Feb. 7.
