NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Navy women's golf team placed fourth out of 11 teams with a 54-hole score of 987 (326-339-322; +147) at the Quinnipiac Classic this Monday through Tuesday at the par-70 New Haven Country Club.
Navy was able to battle through tough weather conditions at the tournament. Due to rain on Sunday, Navy was unable to play a full practice round, which unfortunately left the team not full prepared for the difficult greens at the New Haven Country Club. There was a strong breeze on Sunday's 36-hole day, while Monday's start times were delayed due to frost.
"We battled hard for the 36 holes on Monday," said Navy head coach Nadia Ste-Marie. "There were a lot of ups and downs and the breeze blew hard all day. The wind made it very difficult to control approach shots into the greens, which resulted in very difficult recoveries. The wind was not nearly as much of a factor on Tuesday and the team, as a whole, managed their games a lot better."
St. John's was the team champion with a three-round score of 946 and was followed by Albany (969), Sacred Heart (974) and Navy (987). Quinnipiac, the host school, finished eight strokes behind Navy in fifth place (995) in the 11-team field.
Navy freshman Morgan Frazier tied for fourth place individually in the 63-player field with a 54-hole score of 241 (77-83-81; +31). It was Frazier's first top-five finish of her collegiate career.
With her 7-over par first-round score of 77, Frazier was in first place in the field after the opening round, leading St. John's Kirsty Beckwith by one stroke. However, Beckwith took control of the tournament with a second-round 73 and a third-round 75 for an overall score of 226 to earn medalist honors.
Navy junior Christine Walker carded her first top-10 finish of the season and the fifth of her career by placing 10th with a 54-hole score of 243 (83-82-78; +33).
Junior Jane Moon tied for 22nd place with a 252 (81-89-82; +42). Moon was one of two players to record an eagle at the tournament. Moon eagled the par five 18th in the first round on Monday.
Junior Legare Augenstein tied for 28th with a 253 (85-87-81; +43) and senior captain Marci Browning tied for 45th with a 262 (93-87-82; +52).
Navy has placed in the top half of the field in all three of its tournaments this fall.
Navy will next play at the Sacred Heart Invitational this Sunday to Monday.
