UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Navy women's cross country team placed 13th out of 28 teams at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional in University Park, Pennsylvania.
"We continued to have a great pack mentality and ran well as a group," Navy head coach Karen Boyle said. "We unfortunately were not able to run as strong as we needed to in a race like this, but we will look at the positives and get ready for the track and field season."
Sophomore Erin McDonnell (Traverse City, Mich.) paced the seven Mids with a 54th place time of 21:57. McDonnell was able to shave off eight seconds from last season's regional meet.
Right behind McDonnell was senior Mary Cate Scully (Fairfax Station, Va.), who finished 70th overall with a career-best regional time of 22:10. Scully also improved on her regional finish, shaving off a full 18 seconds from her previous best time in 2014 at 22:28.
Junior Allison Parks (Lisbon, Ohio) crossed the finish line at 22:24 for 87th place. Following Parks was teammates Brenna McDannold (Overland Park, Kan.) and Ali Valenti (Lansdale, Pa.), who finished 94th and 98th, respectively, with times of 22:34 and 22:38 to round out Navy's five scoring runners.
Freshmen Grace West (Pinehurst, N.C.) and Caitlin Schmitt (Evergreen, Colo.) completed Navy's seven runners with finishes of 104th and 117, respectively. West crossed the tape ahead of Schmitt with a time of 22:41, while Schmitt finished at 22:55.
Navy tallied 403 team points for 13th place.
Ninth-ranked Penn State led the regional field with 36 team points and tallying three of the first four runners across the tape. Nittany Lion sophomore Tessa Barrett won the individual crown with a time of 20:00, finishing nine seconds ahead of second-place finisher Jillian Forsey (West Virginia.
21st-ranked Villanova placed second with 93 team points and four top-25 finishers. 24th-ranked Penn (99), West Virginia and RV Georgetown (141) rounded out the top five.
