Men's Tennis Concludes Fall Campaign

Nov. 14, 2016

Final Stats

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. â€"â€" The Navy men's tennis team concluded its fall campaign by competing in the Wake Forest Invitational this weekend in Winston-Salem, N.C.

"It was a great trip filled with a lot of tennis," said Navy head coach Chris Garner. "Zach Jennings (Fr., Snellville, Ga.), Gabriel Pilones (Fr., Bradenton, Fla.), Matthew Lee (Fr., San Diego, Calif.) and Greg Durham (Fr., Melbourne Beach, Fla.) all were able to pick-up some solid wins."

Jennings had one of the best performances among the 10 Mids who made the trip. He reached the championship match of the C-1 singles flight and teamed with Pilones to win the third-place match in the A-3 doubles flight. Pilones himself won the third-place match in the C-1 singles draw.

A pair of Mids also played deep into the C-2 singles flight as Lee would defeat teammate Durham in the bracket's fifth-place match. Additionally, the doubles tandem of Andrew Hicks (So., Haddon Heights, N.J.) and Joshua Martin (Jr., Foley, Ala.) lost in the final of the C-2 doubles draw, with Hicks also winning the seventh-place match of the D-2 singles flight and Martin winning the consolation half of the D-1 singles draw.

Kentucky, Davidson, Virginia Tech, Campbell and Georgia State were some of the other teams that sent players to the three-day invite.

"Over the course of the fall," said Garner, "all members of the team got to see playing time. This will help them as they try to progress and improve moving into the spring. Win or lose, the team is competing well. I was impressed by their effort."

Navy will open its spring season Jan. 22 when it plays host to St. Bonaventure at 11 a.m. and Saint Francis U. at 2:30 p.m.
